Fourth-Quarter Surge Propels Diplomats over Shoremen

CHESTERTOWN, Md. — No. 15 Franklin & Marshall closed out the game with a 7-1 run to break an 8-8 tie and defeated Washington 15-9 in Centennial Conference (CC) men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon. The win is the 11th straight for F&M as the Diplomats improved to 11-2, 6-0 CC while the Shoremen dropped to 9-5, 3-3 CC.

F&M led 8-3 early in the third before Washington netted five straight and tied the game at 8-8 with 12:16 left to play in the fourth quarter. Kevin Mollihan netted back-to-back goals to put the Diplomats back out front for good and Washington again came within a point, 10-9, with six minutes left to play. 

The Diplomats countered and closed out the game with five unanswered goals in a four-minute span. Mollihan found Tucker McBride for the first goal of the run and Sean Rogers connected with George Briggs at 3:34 for a 12-9 F&M advantage. Rogers buried a pass from McBride at 3:06 and Ellis Llewellyn along with Rogers finished the game with unassisted scores. 

Washington took an early 2-1 lead midway through the first quarter. F&M answered with a 4-0 run and held a 5-2 lead early in the second. Harry Rice fed Shane McBride to start the spurt and Ronan Garcia finished off a pass from Rogers before Briggs assisted T. McBride to give F&M a 4-2 lead heading into the second.

Mollihan put the first point on the board in the second quarter and after a Washington goal at 4:51, Mike Rama took a pass from Briggs and found the back of the net to give F&M a 6-3 lead at the break.

Briggs and T. McBride scored early in the third to make it 8-3, which set up Washington's game-tying run. 

Mollihan finished with three scores and two helpers and Rogers along with Briggs ended with two goals and three assists each to pace the offense.

Anthony Dougherty led the defense with four caused turnovers and six ground balls while Scott Hatch picked up the win with seven saves and three ground balls and improved to 11-2.

F&M has a pivotal week ahead as the Diplomats close out the regular season and look to secure the top seed in the CC Tournament. F&M travels to No. 13 Dickinson on Wednesday for a 7:00 p.m. game, before hosting Muhlenberg at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday.
