LANCASTER, Pa. - Franklin & Marshall lost to Dickinson 17-10 in double overtime in Centennial Conference (CC) football action Saturday afternoon in Lancaster. The Diplomats fell to 4-3, 3-3 CC, while the Red Devils improved to 4-3, 3-3 CC.
First Quarter (F&M – 0 | DC – 0)
Dickinson had a chance at putting points up on the board on their first drive, but a 42-yard field goal effort sliced wide left.
Franklin & Marshall chewed up the majority of the time at the end of the quarter, running a methodical 15 play, 55-yard drive to the Dickinson 15 that ate 7:28 off the clock. The 32-yard attempt from Jack Rodenberger also went wide to the left, keeping things knotted at zero.
Second Quarter (F&M – 0 | DC – 0)
Neither side put up points, leading to a scoreless tie at the break.
Third Quarter (F&M – 0 DC – 3)
Dickinson finally converted the first points of the afternoon on their second drive. A Keshon Farmer fumble returned to the Diplomat 22-yard line set the stage for a 25-yard field goal from the Red Devils for a 3-0 lead.
The Red Devils would lead another long drive on their next possession down to the Diplomats 26-yard line. A lofted throw from Dickinson's QB Robert Geiss was tipped by Luke Strauss and intercepted in the endzone by Kell Hall, ending the scoring threat.
Fourth Quarter (F&M – 3 | DC – 3)
F&M continued the trend of scoring off turnovers, going 70 yards in 15 plays down to the Dickinson 10 to set up a 27-yard field goal from Jack Rodenberger to knot things at three apiece. Joe Hartley-Vittoria started the drive with a 16-yard scamper, then had another 15 yards tacked on following a Red Devils personal foul penalty to give the Diplomats life in Dickinson territory.
The Diplomat defense stood tall inside their red zone on the ensuing Red Devil possession, blocking a 27-yard field goal attempt to preserve the tie. Luke Strauss broke through the left side of the Dickinson line to get a hand on the kick, which fell short in the endzone.
A three-and-out from F&M on the following possession gave the Red Devils excellent field position at their own 48. Seb Silva-Muniz continued his play-making streak from the previous week, forcing a fumble on the fourth play of the drive to end yet another scoring threat.
The Diplomats nearly ended things at the end of the regulation, as a 29-yard pass completion from Garrett Perschy to Kevin Lammers flipped the field to the Red Devil 34, then another 13-yard completion to Drew Benfatti set up a 44-yard field goal attempt to win it. The 44-yard try from Rodenberger missed wide, setting the stage for overtime.
First Overtime (F&M – 10 | DC – 10)
F&M struck first in the extra session, as Garrett Perschy rolled to his right, then fired back across the field to Tim Walter for a touchdown.
Dickinson would answer back on their first play of overtime, connecting on a 25-yard strike of their own to force another round of overtime.
Second Overtime (F&M – 10 | DC – 17)
The Red Devils kept the ball on the ground during their ensuing possession, running Phillip Butler three times for the score.
Franklin & Marshall needed to convert on a 4th and 1 at the Dickinson 16 yard line to keep the drive alive, highlighted by a 7-yard pitch to Joe Hartley-Vittoria for a first down. The Diplomats failed to convert on their next fourth-down try, as Perschy was sacked to seal the Dickinson victory.
Final Numbers
Garrett Perschy led the Diplomats offense with 214 net yards (204 passing, 10 rushing) and a touchdown.
Joe Hartley-Vittoria led the rushing effort with 45 yards on 13 carries, while Keshon Farmer ended with 26 yards on 12 rushes.
Tim Walter caught five balls for 64 yards and a touchdown. Kevin Lammers finished with 63 yards on 4 catches.
The defense was led by Calvin Krippner with eight tackles (5s, 3a), including a tackle for loss. Seb Silva-Muniz continued his stretch of strong play with six tackles (5s, 1a), and was responsible for the key forced fumble in the fourth quarter. Marlon Fenstermacher (5s, 1a) and Kell Hall (4s, 2a) each finished with six tackles. Hall also finished with the lone Diplomat interception.
