LANCASTER, Pa. – Kristin Hamill became the 18th Diplomat to cross the 1,000-point threshold on Wednesday night as Franklin & Marshall's women's basketball team fell to Haverford, 71-61, in Centennial Conference (CC) action.
The Diplomats dropped to 3-4, 2-2 CC while the Fords improved to 5-2, 2-0 CC.
Haverford jumped out to a 5-0 lead to open the game, but an Emily Moran three-pointer followed by a Sarosha Parsons layup knotted the score back up, 5-5. The Fords went on an 11-6 run to finish out the quarter with a 16-11 lead.
The Fords scored six of the first eight points to open the second, taking a 22-13 advantage. F&M went on an 11-5 run of its own, capped by a Maia Lockhart layup with three seconds left in the half, as the Diplomats cut the deficit to 27-24 heading into the break.
The Diplomats trailed 35-29 with 7:10 left in the third quarter before four consecutive Williams free throws ignited a 10-4 F&M run that tied the game, 39-39. Haverford claimed seven of the next nine points to take a five-point lead, 46-41, entering the final frame.
Facing a 51-43 deficit with 7:52 left in the game, Hamill knocked down a jumper to score her 1,000th career point and converted an and-one opportunity less than 30 seconds later to bring the Diplomats back within three, 51-48. Haverford erupted on a 9-2 run, capped by a Julianna Clark three-pointer, to take a 60-50 lead. The two sides traded buckets over the final four minutes as the Diplomats never got back within less than nine points before the 71-61 score went final.
Hamill finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds on her historic night for a double-double. Williams picked up 14 points and 12 boards for a double-double of her own.
Clark scored 29 for the Fords, including 7-of-12 from three, to lead all scorers.
The Diplomats performed strongly at the charity stripe, converting 11 of their 14 free throws (78.6 percent) on the night compared to a 12-for-19 (63.2 percent) performance from Haverford.
F&M hits the road Saturday to take on Washington at 1:00 p.m. in CC play.
