Diplomats Gear Up for Conference Championships

LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall's women's swimming team begins its bid for a fifth Centennial Conference (CC) Title this Thursday when the CC Championships begin at 7:00 p.m. at Gettysburg. The weekend will be comprised of seven sessions, one on Thursday and then two per day on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday as the Conference gathers to crown team and individual champions. F&M looks to earn its first team crown since 2010 after finishing fourth last year.

Championship History
Gettysburg has historically dominated the team championships, winning 14 team titles in 24 seasons of competition. Ursinus ('14, '15, '16, '17, '18), who enters the weekend looking for its sixth-straight Title, and F&M ('04, '05, '10) are the only other teams to win more than two Championships. 

Last year, the Bears tallied 929 points to win, followed by Swarthmore in second with 603. Gettysburg took third with 532 points while F&M followed with 399.

Medal Hunt
First-year Tara Kupsky enters the weekend the top seed in the 200-yard IM (2:10.94) and 400-yard IM (4:36.34) and also ranks third in the 200-yard butterfly (2:10.96).

Julia Pavlov, Katherine Hirsch, and Grace Pereles will represent F&M in the freestyle events. Pavlov sits third in the 50-yard (24.36) and 100-yard (53.56) while Hirsch ranks seventh in the 200-yard (1:57.84). Pereles enters the weekend sixth in the 1,650-yard (10:58.97) and ninth in the 500-yard (5:20.36).

Anna Hess and Janashree Jonnalagadda will handle the backstroke events for the Diplomats with Hess coming in fifth in the 100-yard (1:00.64) and eighth in the 200-yard (2:11.89). Jonnalagadda is also in the medal hunt in the 100-yard (seventh – 1:00.66) and the 200-yard (ninth – 2:12.83).

Leah Williamson looks to lead the butterfly events with the three-seed in the 100-yard (58.67) and sixth-seed in the 200-yard (2:13.13). Skye Howes and Amelia Bothwell will also compete as top-10 seeds in the butterfly events.

The Diplomats' relay teams will be in the medal hunt as all team currently sit in the top-five seed.

Championship Format
The CC Championship event now spans four days. Thursday evening will have two relays, the 200 Medley, and 800 Freestyle, then Friday-Sunday will only have one relay per day. This format is modeled after DI Championships to allow sufficient rest between relays and individual events so that athletes can perform to the best of their capabilities.

NOTE: All heats of the 1,650-yard freestyle, except the final heat, will be contested at the conclusion of the preliminary session.  The heats will be swum fastest to slowest, alternating women and men.  The fastest heat of the event will be contested in the Finals.
