GRANTHAM, Pa. -- Kevin Mollihan and Luke Keating combined for nine goals to lead No. 14 Franklin & Marshall to a 13-8 victory over Messiah in men's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon. The Diplomats improved to 3-1, while Messiah fell to 0-5.
Kevin Mollihan scored his 207th goal in the victory, which breaks the Centennial Conference record for career goals, previously held by McDaniel's Tom Brown, who set the record back in 2002.
F&M went ahead early with a goal at 14:11, but the Falcons quickly answered with four straight scores to take a 4-1 lead with 2:43 left in the first. The Diplomats countered with a 5-0 run led by Mollihan's three goals and Blake Target buried a pass from Will Mulligan at 8:03 in the second to put the Diplomats up 6-4.
Messiah tied the game at 6-6 with 2:17 on the clock, but Keating finished off a pass from A.J. Rigsby with just 44 ticks left to put F&M up 7-6 at the break.
It was all F&M in the third as the Diplomats scored three unanswered and took a 10-6 lead in the final frame. Kevin Mollihan and Will Mollihan each scored a goal in the first four minutes of the fourth quarter and after two by the Falcons, Luke Keating put the last point on the board at 7:15.
Kevin Mollihan led all scorers with five goals and added six ground balls, Luke Keating had four scores with one assist and Blake Target struck twice. Will Mulligan and George LeBoeuf handed out two assists each, while Will DeMuth and Will Mollihan each scored once.
Jack Beatty was 10-for-17 from the X and ended with seven ground balls. Jarret Donaghy ended with four ground balls.
Sage Garito improved to 3-1 with one save and Eric Mueller turned away three shots in the second half for F&M.
F&M outshot Messiah 52-33, held a 52-35 edge in ground balls and went 17-for-20 in clear attempts.
The Diplomats return to action on Friday when F&M takes on Stevenson at 8:30 p.m. before facing Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. Both games are part of the Mustang Classic and will be hosted by Stevenson.
