Box Score CARLISLE, Pa. – The Franklin & Marshall field hockey team suffered another heart-breaking defeat on a goal late in the fourth quarter as the Diplomats fell to Dickinson by a 2-1 score on Wednesday afternoon. The Diplomats seemed to once again be generating more chances with a 14-9 advantage in shots, but a Red Devils' goal with just over 10 minutes remaining in regulation proved to be the difference.
The Diplomats struck first as Jessica Miller just beat the first quarter buzzer by four seconds to give her team a huge momentum swing heading into the first break. Miller, who was making just her second start of the season, provided the instant offense with the third goal of her rookie campaign. Sydney Wieczkowski set up the early tally as the senior was credited with her first point of the season off of that assist.
Franklin & Marshall's first goal came despite Dickinson holding a 4-2 in shots after the first quarter. The Diplomats would soon flip the script and hold the advantage in shots during each of the final three quarters. However, it was only the Red Devils that had anything to show despite those efforts. Dickinson tied the contest just under two minutes into the second quarter.
Despite the next five shots on goal coming from the Diplomats, it was Dickinson's only other shot on goal of the afternoon that was the eventual game-winner. That goal came off of a penalty corner chance as Hannah Spiri scored following the insert from Ellie Werner, giving Dickinson its first lead of the afternoon. F&M certainly did all it could in search of the equalizer as the Diplomats took three shots in quick succession while earning an additional penalty corner, only to be denied throughout the remaining time. That final attacking penalty corner chance also gave the Diplomats a 7-6 advantage in that category for the match.
Field hockey will return to Tylus Field this weekend as the team helps to jump start the College's TrueBlue Weekend varsity athletic events with a game against Swarthmore at 12 p.m. F&M holds a winning record on Tylus Field this fall and will play three of its last five regular season contests in front of its home crowd as it looks to chase down a playoff appearance.
