Box Score MIDDLETOWN, Pa. -- A.J. Kopacz's penalty kick goal in the final minute of the second overtime gave Franklin & Marshall (4-0-0) its fourth straight 1-0 victory to start the season in a win over Penn State-Harrisburg on Tuesday evening.
After conceding some early chances for Penn State-Harrisburg, F&M controlled the run of play in the middle of the first half. Magnus Parente, Christian Avila Neres, and Steven Yakita all registered shots on frame between the 18th and 20th minutes that were parried by the opposing backstop, while Christian Clark pinged one off the crossbar.
The second half and first stanza of overtime was a bit more nip and tuck, as neither side delivered on the few chances provided. A red card shown to the Diplomats in the 69th minute created an uphill battle for the remaining portion of regulation as F&M tucked in to force extra time. In all, four yellow cards were shown in a chippy second half - two to either side.
The second overtime provided some dramatics for both sides. Philip Monos had a shot cleared away on a defensive save just 53 seconds into the period to keep the score level. A few minutes later, the Nittany Lions thought they had the game winner, as Sam Altman Farrell came off his line to snare a loose ball. The ball found its way into the net, but was called back after Farrell was interfered with by the Penn State-Harrisburg forward.
A mistake off a Nittany Lion throw-in on the far sideline gave the Diplomats a golden opportunity, as Avila Neres deflected a back-pass towards the top of the box. Shay Adamson pounced on the opportunity, but was met by a sliding keeper at the edge of the 18.
After Avila Neres was clipped on the near sideline, the referee allowed F&M to play advantage. It was a good thing, too - Adamson wound his way into the box, and his cross was handled by a Penn State-Harrisburg player in the box.
Kopacz calmly stepped to the spot and the senior forward buried the chance with only 40 seconds remaining on the clock to end the game. The PK goal was the sixth in Kopacz's career, as he is now a perfect six of six from the spot.
The Nittany Lions led 13-10 in shots, but the teams finished level in shots on goal with six apiece. Yakita, Monos, and Adamson both finished with two shots.
Sam Altman Farrell made six saves for his fourth consecutive shutout victory.
