Field Hockey Takes Down Catholic, 4-1

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The sixth-ranked Franklin & Marshall field hockey team scored two goals in the second quarter and two more in the fourth to collect a 4-1 victory at Catholic on Sunday. The win gives the Diplomats (4-2) victories in back-to-back days as today's result comes on the heels of yesterday's 3-0 home win versus Lebanon Valley.

Kat Horsley and Amelia McCarthy each scored a pair of goals to pace the F&M attack. Both teams finished the game with nine shots and eight penalty corners. Nevertheless, the Diplomats were much more efficient with their offensive chances as they put eight of their nine shot attempts on goal, compared to just two from the host Cardinals. Sydney Lippe picked up the win to notch her fourth victory as the goalie of record this season.

Horsley did her damage in the second quarter as her goals opened up the scoring in Sunday's contest. She first finished a ball off of one of the Diplomats' eight first half penalty corner opportunities as she hammered home the pass from Maddie Bickel to make it 1-0. Bickel now has three assists on the year. Horsley scored the eventual game-winning goal in unassisted fashion just 11 seconds before the half. Horsley now four goals on the year to already set a new career high. F&M nearly had a 4-0 lead at the half, but two defensive saves from the Catholic back line prevented any further damage during the opening half.

After 30 minutes of play, F&M held a 7-2 advantage in shots and an 8-2 edge in attacking penalty corner chances. Catholic showed it was not going to go down without a fight as the Cardinals brought the match within a single goal just 1:13 into the second half. However, that was the final shot on goal that the Diplomats' defense would surrender the rest of the afternoon.

McCarthy was responsible for finishing the insurance goals in the fourth quarter, bringing her season total to three goals after she also scored the game-winner against Mary Washington. McCarthy beat the keeper on a pass from Avery Niedland just over a minute into the fourth quarter and finished her afternoon with an unassisted tally with nine minutes left in regulation. Niedland's helper marked the first assist of her career.

After challenging themselves with a tough non-conference slate, the Diplomats will turn their attention to Centennial Conference action which opens next Saturday against nationally-ranked Ursinus. That contest is slated for a 12 p.m. start in Collegeville.
