LANCASTER, Pa. -- No. 2 Franklin & Marshall used a two-goal effort from Sophie Carroll and a two-assist game from Maddie Bickel to blow past FDU-Florham 4-1 on Saturday afternoon at Tylus Field. With the win, the Diplomats improved to 1-0, while the Devils dropped to 0-1.

F&M stormed out of the gates just 5:30 into the game, taking advantage of a penalty corner from Kat Horsley that made its way to Maddie Bickel, then a rifled shot from Sophie Carroll that knocked off an opposing stick into the net for a 1-0 lead.

FDU-Florham knotted things up at one apiece roughly the same amount of time into the second quarter, as some nifty passing weaved its way through the Diplomat defense for the tying score.

Kat Horsley put F&M ahead for good less than two minutes later, converting on a penalty attempt for the 2-1 lead. The goal was Horsley's third game winner in her last four scores, dating back to the 2019 season.

The Diplomats wasted little time after the halftime break to put the game to bed. The Bickel to Carroll combo struck again just 27 seconds into the half, pushing the F&M lead to 3-1. About 90 seconds later, Carolina Riley picked up a rebound in front of the Devils' keeper and knocked in her first career goal for a 4-1 scoreline. FDU-Florham would put on a bit more pressure against an emptied Diplomat bench, but not enough to change the final score.

Sydney Lippe needed to make only two saves for her first win of the season.

Carolina Riley led the Diplomats with six shots, while Sophie Carroll and Amelia McCarthy had four apiece. The Diplomats outshot the Devils 21-3, including 8-0 stanzas in the first and third quarters. F&M also led in penalty corners 13-6.

The win will provide some momentum for the Diplomats entering an early-season battle of ranked opponents, when No. 8 Messiah comes to town on Wednesday, Sept. 8 at 7:00pm at Tylus Field.
