Box Score COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Franklin & Marshall women's basketball team used a third quarter surge to overtake Ursinus in a 67-54 victory on the road Thursday night. Trailing by just three points headed into the locker rooms at halftime, the Diplomats scored the first eight points of the second half and eventually outscored the hosts 21-9 in that quarter to complete the season sweep of the Bears.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair, with the Diplomats taking their first lead of the game after a Kenna Williams layup gave F&M an 8-7 advantage. Ursinus recovered and led 16-12 after just 10 minutes. The two sides swapped the lead on four different occasions during the second frame. Those momentum swings ultimately resulted in the Bears holding a 30-27 advantage heading into halftime.
Coming out of the locker rooms, Natalie Kolb pushed the Diplomats back on top with a three-pointer as F&M led 33-30 with 6:18 remaining in the third quarter. Kennedy Wilburn added to the scoring punch on the very next possession as F&M opened the second half with an 8-0 run to lead 35-30.
Kolb was ultimately the spark F&M needed as she scored 11 of her 16 points during the third quarter, playing a huge role in the Diplomats' 13-4 run to end the frame. Fueled by that breakout quarter in which the Diplomats shot 57 percent from the field, Franklin & Marshall carried a 48-39 lead into the final 10 minutes of game action.
Ursinus did not go away without a fight as the Bears closed the game to two-point deficit with 6:20 remaining in regulation. However, a 15-4 surge by F&M was enough to hold the lead in the 67-54 final. F&M finished the game shooting 50 percent from the field and out-rebounded the Bears by a 43-27 margin.
Kolb led the Diplomats with 16 points and just missed a double-double with nine rebounds. Wilburn (13) and Williams (10) joined her in double figures. Williams additionally pulled down 15 total rebounds for another double-double.
F&M returns to the Mayser Center on Saturday, January 29 at 1 p.m. for a Centennial Conference matchup against Bryn Mawr. That contest will be see the Diplomats vying for their second consecutive sweep of a season series this week.
