Game 1: Franklin & Marshall 4, McDaniel 3
The Green Terror took an early two-run lead in the contest, but the Diplomats answered with four runs in the top of the fourth to earn the victory in game one.
Trailing 2-0 in the fourth inning,
Bobby Falese and
Jakob Hoffman hit back-to back singles to lead off the frame. A sacrifice bunt from
Michael von Zuben put both runners in scoring position to set up
Evan Varga to score Falese on an RBI-single, cutting the deficit in half.
Drew Butera then laid down a bunt to push Hoffman across the plate and tie the game, while also allowing himself to reach base on the play. The next batter,
Andrew Filippelli ripped a single into center field to load the bases with one out in the inning. A wild pitch and a fielding error during the next two at-bats allowed the Diplomats to push across two more runs – giving F&M a 4-2 advantage.
McDaniel got the tying run on base with two outs in the ninth, but
Thomas McLaughlin forced a fly out to center field to end the game.
Hoffman led the Diplomats with two hits, while Butera and Varga each recorded an RBI in the win. Also,
Patrick Cettina,
AJ Desautels, and Hoffman each stole a base in the contest.
Dan Galef (3-3) earned the win in his eighth start of the season as he struck out two and allowed two earned runs in six innings of work. McLaughlin locked-up his fourth save of the year as he struck out one and didn't allow a hit in 1.1 innings of relief.
Game 2: McDaniel 3, Franklin & Marshall 2
The Diplomats and Green Terror took all nine innings of game two to decide the winner as McDaniel worked the bases loaded in the final frame - setting up a walk-off hit by pitch to claim the win in the second game of Saturday's twinbill.
F&M got a base runner on early as Desautels led off the game with a walk. On the following at-bat, an errant throw on a pickoff attempt allowed the junior to race around the bases to third. The Diplomats capitalized on the mistake as Berson shot a single up the middle of the infield to plate Desautels for the first run of the game.
McDaniel responded by tying the score in the next half inning and later took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third.
In the top of the sixth, von Zuben singled through the left side of the infield to lead off the inning. After
Matt Hollender worked a walk, both runners took off for the next base on a double steal. The throw from the McDaniel catcher sailed into left field to allow von Zuben to score and tie the game up at 2-2.
F&M had an opportunity to push a run across in the top of the eighth as von Zuben reached on an error and stole second - putting a runner in scoring position with one out. However, McDaniel forced two fly outs to end the inning with no damage.
Von Zuben led the Diplomats with one hit, while Berson, Falese, and Hoffman each recorded one in the game.
Jackson Hyman (0-1) was tagged with the loss, striking out one and allowing one earned run in 2.2 innings of relief.
Peter Mullen was hit with a no-decision in his fifth start of the year – striking out five and allowing one earned run in four innings of work.
Franklin & Marshall heads to Gettysburg on Sunday to complete its home-and-home series with the Bullets. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
