WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Mackenzie Ward certainly made the best of her last chance as she recorded the 12th-best javelin throw in Division III this season and put herself in strong position to qualify for the NCAA Division III Championships. Ward was one of several Diplomats who competed on day one at the All-Atlantic Regional Championships hosted by Williams College on Wednesday.
Ward broke her own school record twice on Wednesday to win the regional championship with a throw of 41.46 meters. Her best mark came on her true last chance to move her up to 12th in the country as of press time. The top 22 declared athletes in each event on the women's side after the conclusion of last chance meets will qualify for the national championships. That list will be announced this Friday, May 16 at 8 p.m.
Tara Silverman also moved up the school record books with her time of 18:20.84 in the 5,000 meters. Her latest personal best placed her 11th in the event and moves her up to seventh all-time in the F&M record book. Katie Scott just missed a personal best as she placed 19th in the steeplechase with a time of 11:37.33.
Amanda Imhauser got her heptathlon started with the first four events as she scored 2,101 combined points. Imhauser set a new personal best in the high jump (1.38m). Her highest scoring individual event came in the 200 meter dash (28.49), with her best finish among her peers being a third-place showing in the shot put (9.47). Imhauser additionally ran the 100 meter hurdles in a time of 17.68 seconds.
The Diplomats will return to action on Thursday with Centennial Conference Champion Annalise Kauffman competing in the 800 meters. Franklin & Marshall is also set to contest a 4x800 relay during the final day of the regional championship.
