Box Score 2 LANCASTER, PA -- Starting pitcher Alison Barrett (Sr., South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) went seven innings allowing two runs on four hits for a win and reliever Jonelle Coletta (So., Point Pleasant Beach, NJ/Point Pleasant Beach) went four innings allowing one run and four hits to earn the victory in a 7-5 comeback win as the Franklin & Marshall College softball team swept Washington College in a Centennial Conference doubleheader at the College's new field at Baker Campus.
The first conference games of the season and on the new field, the Diplomats took game one in nail-biter fashion as Barrett went the distance fanning two while pitching six shutout innings after a first inning run in the 2-1 victory.
The Shorewomen (5-10-1, 0-2 CC) jumped out in front in the top of the first as leadoff hitter Tara Harrigan doubled to center field. Laura Mozzer sacrificed her over to second and Maria Hogg singled to drive her home as Washington took the lead.
Franklin & Marshall did not respond until the fifth inning as Amy Miller (So., Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) and Leah Shams-Molkara (Sr., Eastchester, NY/Tuckahoe) drew one out walks and Jen Fried (Sr., Reisterstown, MD/Franklin) singled to load the bases. Dana Johns (So., York, PA/Eastern York) then doubled home two runs for the difference as Barrett allowed two hits over the remainder of the game to improve to 4-1 on the year.
Overall, Barrett leads the staff in ERA (1.40), wins (four), innings pitched (30.0) and strikeouts (22).
In the second game, Coletta went four innings in relief of starting pitcher Fried as F&M rallied from a 4-0 deficit to win 7-5 over the Shorewomen and complete the sweep.
Washington jumped on the board in the first inning with two runs and tacked on two more in the third to take a 4-0 lead.
F&M tied the game in the bottom of the third with four runs and took the lead in the fourth as Miller and Shams-Molkara singled to put runners on first and second. Laura DePalma (Jr., Toms River, NJ/Toms River) then singled to plate the go ahead run.
However, WC's Diane Green launched the first home run in the history of the College's new field to tie the game at 5-5 in the fifth.
F&M closed out the win in the sixth as the Diplomats pushed two across the plate for the deciding factor.
The final innings were not without drama as the Shorewomen loaded the bases with two outs before Coletta induced a pop-up by Andrea Braverman back to the mound for the final out as the Diplomats improve to 36-10 all-time against Washington.
Franklin & Marshall (5-3, 2-0 CC) will continue the season on March 28 in a non-conference doubleheader at Moravian College. Opening pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
