Diplomats Hand Gettysburg First Centennial Conference Softball Loss in Doubleheader Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LANCASTER, PA -- Pitcher Alison Barrett (Sr., South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) went the distance allowing one unearned run on three hits as the Franklin & Marshall College softball team downed Gettysburg College 2-1 in the first game of a Centennial Conference doubleheader split.

The loss marks the first Centennial Conference defeat of the season for the Bullets (17-6, 9-1 CC), while F&M improved its record to 7-11, 4-6 in CC play.

In the game, the Diplomats jumped on the scoreboard in the fifth inning as Barrett singled before Morgan Marks (Fr., Furlong, PA/Central Bucks East) doubled to drive in the go-ahead run. Kristyn Miller (So., Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) singled, but Marks was gunned down from centerfield while going to third base. Jonelle Coletta (So., Point Pleasant Beach, NJ/Point Pleasant) singled to move Miller to second base and Leah-Shams-Molkara (Sr., Eastchester, NY/Tuckahoe) grounded out to third base to advance the runners into scoring position before Jen Fried (Jr., Reisterstown, MD/Franklin) singled to plate Miller with the game-winning run.

Leading 2-0, the Diplomats saw their lead cut in half as Katie Eiden reached on an error at second base and scored one batter later as Jackie Pareso doubled to drive in a run. With a runner in scoring position and less than two outs, Barrett worked out of the jam getting April 12 Centennial Conference Player of the Week Molly Gale to ground out to second base and Megan Pilarcik to fly-out to center field to end the threat.

In the bottom of the seventh, Barrett mowed through the Bullets' batters getting Margaret Hallahan to fly-out to rightfield, Meg Gorsuch to pop-up to first base and Michelle Oravis to ground out to third for the first win over Gettysburg since the 2002 season.

Overall, Barrett struck out three batters and allowed only one runner to reach third base during the game. At the plate, Fried hit three-for-four with a RBI to lead the team, while Barrett went two-for-four with a run scored as Franklin & Marshall slugged 12 hits off Gettysburg pitcher Shannon Kiry.

For Gettysburg, Pareso, Pilarcik and Gorsuch all went one-for-three, while Eiden reached base courtesy a walk. On the mound, Kiry allowed 12 hits and two walks over six innings to take the loss.

In game two, the Bullets jumped on the board in the second inning before rallying for two runs in the top of the seventh inning for a 3-1 win.

Gale led off the second inning for Gettysburg with a triple and scored on a fielding error in rightfield on a misplayed ball off the bat of Pilarcik for a 1-0 Gettysburg lead.

The Diplomats tied the game in the fourth inning as Dana Johns (So., York, PA/Eastern York) and Laura Depalma (Jr., Toms River, NJ/Toms River) singled to put two runners on with no-outs. Allison Pavero (So., Malvern, PA/Notre Dame Academy) hit into a fielders choice as the Bullets forced Depalma at second base and Johns was picked off at third base for two outs. With a runner on first base, Barrett tripled to the gap to plate Pavero and knot the game at 1-1.

The score remained tied until the top of the seventh as Gale walked and moved to second on a ground out before racing home as Margaret Hallahan lined a ball to third base for an error. Hallahan, who advanced to third base on an over-throw from leftfield to the plate in an attempt to get Gale at the plate, then scored on a close play at the plate for an insurance run as Gorsuch reached on a fielder's choice.

Franklin & Marshall had a shot to tie the game in the bottom of the inning as Coletta walked and Shams-Molkara was hit by a pitch to put two runners on base, but Gettysburg pitcher Pareso got Fried to bounce a shot back to the mound for a ground out.

On the mound, Fried took the loss allowing three runs (all unearned) on four hits and two walks with three strikeouts. Coletta closed out the game facing two batters in the seventh for a pair of outs. For Gettysburg, Pareso earned the win going the distance while allowing one run on five hits and two walks with a strikeout.

Franklin & Marshall will continue the season on April 17 at Swarthmore College. Game one is set for 1:00 p.m.
