Fried & Barrett Lead Diplomats to Sweep of Haverford in Softball

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

HAVERFORD, PA -- Jen Fried (Sr., Reisterstown, MD/Franklin) went four-for-nine with three runs scored and five RBI out of the leadoff spot and Alison Barrett (Sr., South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) tossed a three-hit shutout to lead the Franklin & Marshall College softball team to a 3-0 & 10-4 sweep of Haverford College in Centennial Conference action.

In game one, Barrett secured her first shutout of the season and the sixth complete game shutout of her career on the mound and at the plate.

Batting in a scoreless game in the top of the seventh inning, Barrett walked and advanced to second on a fielding error by Haverford's Kailyn Luther on a ball hit by Morgan Marks (Fr., Furlong, PA/CB East) to put two runners on with no outs. Kristyn Miller (So., Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) sacrifice bunted to move the runners to second and third before Jonelle Coletta (So., Point Pleasant Beach, NJ/Point Pleasant Beach) singled to load the bases with one out. Leah Shams-Molkara (Sr., Eastchester, NY/Tuckahoe) singled to drive in Barrett and Marks for the winning runs while Coletta advanced to third base. Fried then drove a pitch onto the outfield grass to plate Coletta for all Barrett would need to earn the win.

Laura DePalma (Jr., Toms River, NJ/Toms River) led F&M at the plate going two-for-three, while Fried hit one-for-four with an RBI.

On the mound, Barrett dominated the Fords allowing singles in the third, sixth and ninth as only two runners reached second base in the game. She finished with three strikeouts in the game to raise her single season total to 47 as she ranks fourth in program history in career K's with 130, nine more than fifth place Karen Kriza '93 (121).

In game two, the story was all Fried as the senior outfielder went three-for-five with three runs scored and five RBI as she singled, doubled and launched a three-run homerun to fall a triple short of hitting for the cycle while also earning the win on the mound.

Haverford scored in the bottom of the first as Amy Havassy singled, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and moved to third on a passed ball. With two outs, Luther singled to drive in Havassy for the go-ahead run.

Franklin & Marshall responded with five runs in the fourth inning as Marks walked before Miller and Coletta singled to load the bases. Shams-Molkara singled to drive in a run and Fried reached on a fielding error by Fords' second baseman Nora Spriggs to take the lead at 2-1 as Miller scored and Coletta was thrown out at the plate by Haverford centerfielder Sarah Nagle for the first out of the inning. Dana Johns (So., York, PA/Eastern York) singled to reload the bases before DePalma lined a two-run single for a 4-1 lead. Following a strikeout by Allison Pavero (So., Malvern, PA/Notre Dame Academy), DePalma and Johns stole second and third to put two runners in scoring position. DePalma then stole third as Johns scored on a throwing error by third baseman Luther for a 5-1 lead. Barrett walked to put runners on the corners, but Haverford pitcher Jen Ward got Marks to fly out as the Diplomats batted around in the inning.

Following a scoreless bottom of the fourth inning, F&M tacked on two more runs in the sixth off Spriggs who took the pitching circle in relief of Ward as Shams singled and Fried doubled her home before racing to third base on the throw home. Johns closed out the inning as she singled to plate Fried for a 7-1 lead.

In the fifth, Havassy walked as Fried went to leftfield and Coletta took the circle as Haverford plated two runs in the inning off two hits and a fielding error to slice the Diplomats' lead to 7-3.

The Fords continued their comeback attempt in the sixth as Haverford used back-to-back singles by Lindsay Grant and Havassy to put runners on first and second before Caitie Kimura hit into a fielder's choice to allow Grant to score.

Leading 7-4, Franklin & Marshall put the game away in the top of the seventh as Miller singled and moved to second on a passed ball. Coletta singled to move Miller to third base and bring up Fried who blasted a three-run bomb for the second homerun of her career and of the 2004 season.

In the bottom of the seventh, Gray Vargas-Regan walked to leadoff the inning and Ward bounced back to the mound to move her to second base before Spriggs hit into a 6-3-5 double play to end the game.

The sweep keeps F&M in the Centennial Conference playoff hunt as the Diplomats upped their record to 8-6 in Conference play to set up an intriguing race to the final out of the CC regular season. Currently, Ursinus (8-1), Gettysburg (9-3), Muhlenberg (8-4), F&M, Dickinson (5-5) and McDaniel (5-3) will vie for the four playoff berths over the season's final week.

Franklin & Marshall will continue the season on April 20 at Dickinson in the Diplomats final CC regular season games of the 2004 season. Game one is set for 5:00 p.m.
