Box Score 2 LANCASTER, PA -- Franklin & Marshall College won 2-1 in game one but fell 4-2 in game two as the Diplomats split a non-conference softball doubleheader with York College of Pennsylvania.
In game one, pitcher Alison Barrett (Sr., South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) tossed a four hit 2-1 victory as the Diplomats (16-17, 10-6 Centennial Conference) evened their record at 16-16 on the season.
Trailing 1-0 following a first inning run by York, the Diplomats gave Barrett all that she would need in the bottom of the third inning as Leah Shams-Molkara (Sr., Eastchester, NY/Tuckahoe) and Jen Fried (Sr., Reisterstown, MD/Franklin) singled to put two runners on base with one out. Dana Johns (So., York, PA/Eastern York) singled to drive in Shams-Molkara and Laura DePalma (Jr., Toms River, NJ/Toms River) lined a single to drive in Fried to conclude the game's scoring.
Barrett and York College starting pitcher Stephanie Shaull dueled the rest of the way as Shaull allowed six hits and two runs over six innings with three strikeouts and a walk, while Barrett picked up her 10th win of the season allowing four hits and one run (unearned) with a walk and five strikeouts.
At the plate, Johns led the way going two-for-three with a RBI, while Fried was one-for-three with a run scored.
The Spartans earned a split in the doubleheader in game two as Harper Cornell roped a two-run homerun off F&M starting pitcher Fried and York pitcher Shannon Fry allowed six hits and two runs over seven innings in a 4-2 win.
York jumped on the board in the top of the first inning as Brittany Malarkey singled and stole second base with one out. Following a strikeout by Caitlyn Fedorishen, Cornell homered to give the Spartans a 2-0 lead.
F&M cut the lead in the half in the second inning as Barrett doubled and Jonelle Coletta (So., Point Pleasant Beach, NJ/Point Pleasant Beach) singled to drive her in to trail 2-1.
However, York tacked on two runs in the third inning off three hits and an error for all Fry needed to take the 4-2 victory.
The Diplomats attempted a comeback in the fourth as Kristyn Miller (So., Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) singled with two outs and scored on an RBI double by Coletta to move to within 4-2, but Fry did not allow a runner past first base the rest of the way as York improved to 19-20 on the year.
Currently, F&M and Muhlenberg are tied for fourth place in the Centennial Conference with both teams holding 10-6 CC marks. The Diplomats will earn a playoff spot if Gettysburg (22-9, 12-4 CC) finishes ahead of McDaniel (22-9, 10-4 CC) in the final standings. However, if Gettysburg and McDaniel tie with 12-4 records, the Diplomats will be eliminated from playoff contention as #1 seed Ursinus lost to the Green Terror giving McDaniel an advantage over Gettysburg. The playoff scenario will be decided on Monday, April 26 at Dickinson as the Green Terror will complete their CC regular season schedule in a doubleheader versus the Red Devils.
