Box Score ELIZABETHTOWN, PA -- Midfielders Kevin Kohl (So., Manasquan, NJ/Loomis Chaffee) and Colin Hanley (Sr., Davidsonville, MD/DeMatha) and attackmen Steve Welsh (Jr., Lewes, DE/Cape Henelopen) and Cyrus Adams (So., Nashville, TN/Montgomery Bell) scored pairs of goals as the #22 Franklin & Marshall College men's lacrosse team opened the 2005 season with an 11-7 at Elizabethtown College.
The game marked the first ever meeting between two Lancaster County teams in men's lacrosse and the second among local colleges as Franklin & Marshall defeated York College 18-11 on March 30, 2002 in Lancaster.
Against the Blue Jays, the Diplomats jumped out to a 3-2 lead in the first quarter.
Hanley opened the scoring at 14:05 as he broke in and buried a shot past Elizabethtown goalie Fran Keever to the go ahead score. Welsh followed with a goal at 12:51 to build the lead to 2-0.
Elizabethtown's Frankie Puzzangara scored at 11:38 and Brian Ginter found the back of the goal at 10:19 to tie the score before Welsh ripped a shot past Keever off a feed from Adams at 10:06 for a 3-2 lead through one quarter.
The Diplomats turned up the heat in the second quarter as Hanley and Kohl netted unassisted goals at 14:08 and 12:18, respectively, for a 4-2 lead before Justin Griffey scored Elizabethtown's lone goal of the second period with 10:06 left. Welsh closed out F&M's first half scoring as he fed a pass to Adams who beat Keever at 6:17 for a 6-3 lead at halftime.
Elizabethtown put a scare into the Diplomats in the third quarter as Griffey scored at 8:21 and Dave Eshleman scored with 5:37 left in the period to cut F&M's lead to 6-5 entering the fourth quarter.
Elizabethtown tied the score at 6-6 with 12:25 remaining in the game when Bryan Miller scored an unassisted goal.
However, Franklin & Marshall turned up the pressure in the fourth quarter as Kohl scored an unassisted goal at 10:49 and Adams finished a pass from Welsh at 8:28 on a man-up opportunity to push the lead out to 8-6.
The Blue Jays attempted to answer as Griffey finished a feed from Rob Towe for a man-up goal at 6:47 to pull to within 8-7.
Tommy Kehoe (Fr., Coraoplolis, PA/Sewickley) gave F&M a 9-7 lead at 6:35, and J.B. Robichau (Sr., Edgartown, MA/Tabor) scored a man-up goal with 2:27 left to give the Diplomats a 10-7 edge. Bobby Atkins (Fr., Concord, MA/Loomis Chafee) scored the game's final goal for the Diplomats at 1:27 for the 11-7 final score.
In goal, Mike Sartorius (Sr., Summit, NJ/Summit) made seven saves with three goals allowed in the first half, while Will McIntire (Sr., Arlington, VA/Taft) stopped five shots and allowed four goals in the second half. For Elizabethtown, Keever made 15 saves in 60 minutes.
Franklin & Marshall (1-0, 0-0 Centennial Conference) will continue the season on March 5 versus Widener University at Swarthmore College. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
