Box Score 2 LANCASTER, PA - Dana Johns (Jr., York, PA/Eastern York) drove a one ball-two strike pitch deep into left field to score Liz Iannaconi (Fr., Palisades Park, NJ/Dwight Englewood with the winning run in the 11th inning as the Franklin & Marshall College softball picked up a 3-2 win to split a Centennial Conference doubleheader with Haverford College at Baker Campus.
Tied 1-1 after nine innings of play, the game went into the tiebreaker format in the 10th inning in which a runner is placed on second base.
Facing F&M reliever Jonelle Coletta (Jr., Point Pleasant Beach, NJ/Point Pleasant Beach) the Fords scrapped a run across in the top of the 10th as Adrian Theis moved from second to third on a sacrifice bunt by Jill Foley and came in on a fly-out to centerfield by Erica Davies.
Franklin & Marshall tied the game in the bottom of the 10th as Ali Tyler (Fr., Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) was placed on second base and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Erin Benjamin (Sr., Mt. Holly, NJ/Rancocas Valley) before Meghan Baker (Fr., Glenville, PA/South Western) lifted a sacrifice fly into leftfield to knot the game at 2-2.
In the 11th, Allison Frank was placed on second for the Fords, but Coletta retired Lindsey Sullivan on a pop-up, and Nora Spriggs and Sarah Czarkowski on fly-outs to left field to give F&M a chance to end the game.
With Iannaconi on second base and one out in the bottom of the 11th, Johns lined a shot into left field for the game-winning double to bring in Iannaconi with the winning run.
The game was a pitching duel throughout as F&M starting pitcher Laura Kaesshaefer (Fr., Philadelphia, PA/Penn Charter) went five innings allowing one run on five hits with three strikeouts before handing the ball off to Coletta who earned the win going six innings with one run on three hits and two strikeouts. For Haverford, Spriggs went the distance allowing three runs on seven hits with six strikeouts in 10.1 innings of work.
Franklin & Marshall took an early 1-0 lead in the game as Morgan Marks (So., Furlong, PA/Central Bucks East) was hit by a pitch and moved to second base on a passed ball in the second inning. Kathleen Clinchy (Fr., Katonah, NY/Somers) doubled to plate Marks as F&M would not score again for eight innings.
Haverford responded in the third inning as Frank reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a fielding error to knot the game at 1-1 until the 10th inning.
In game one, F&M jumped out to leads of 1-0 and 3-1, but Haverford posted five runs in the fourth inning to hold on for a 7-5 win over Franklin & Marshall as the Fords recorded their first win against the Diplomats since 1998.
The Diplomats opened in the scoring in the first inning as Johns singled, stole second and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Laura DePalma (Sr., Toms River, NJ/Toms River) before scoring on a passed ball.
Haverford tied the game as Sullivan homered to left-center field in the top of the second inning, but F&M regained the lead as Coletta doubled and Baker slammed a two-run home run over the fence for a 3-1 margin.
However, Haverford posted five runs on five hits in the fourth inning to take a 6-3 lead and hold on for the win.
Franklin & Marshall attempted to rally as DePalma homered in the fifth and scored a run in the seventh inning on a ground out by Benjamin.
Bonnie Crouthamel (Fr., Chatham, NJ/Chatham) took the loss for F&M allowing six runs on eight hits and four walks with four strikeouts in four innings before being relieved by Tyler who allowed one run on two hits in three innings with two strikeouts.
Catherine Knepp picked up the win for Haverford going six innings in relief of starting pitcher Julie Iodice allowing two runs on four hits and one walk with four strikeouts.
Franklin & Marshall (4-18, 2-6 Centennial Conference) will continue the season on April 14 versus Elizabethtown at Baker Campus in a non-conference doubleheader. Game one is set to start at 3:30 p.m.
