Adams Scores Seven Goals as Franklin & Marshall Handles Haverford 13-5 in Men's Lacrosse

LANCASTER, PA -- Attackman Cyrus Adams (So., Nashville, TN/Montgomery Bell) scored seven goals to lead the Franklin & Marshall College men's lacrosse team to a 13-5 victory over Haverford College in Centennial Conference action at Williamson Field.

Overall, Adams performance marks the eighth most goals scored in a men's lacrosse game by a Diplomat and is one score off his career best of eight goals established in an 18-8 win against Kenyon on March 16 in Florida.

The Diplomats opened the scoring with 46 seconds left in the first period as attackman Steve Welsh (Sr., Lewes, DE/Cape Henelopen) finished an assist from Pat Grove (Jr., Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) over the left shoulder of Haverford goalie KC Peterson for a 1-0 lead.

Adams added a pair of scores in the second period as he converted off assists from Kevin Kohl (So., Manasquan, NY/Loomis Chaffee) and JB Robichau (Sr., Edgartown, MA/Tabor) at 14:49 and 14:01, respectively, for a 3-0 lead at halftime.

The story of the first half was the defensive play of the Diplomats as F&M held Haverford without a shot for the first 13 minutes of the first period and shut down the Fords for the final 13 minutes of the second period as Haverford managed three shots, including two on goal, in the half.

However, Haverford cut the lead to 3-2 in the opening minutes of the second half as Mike Distler finished an assist from Max Tcheyan for a man-up goal at 12:39 before Chuck Culp rifled a shot off an assist from Matt Handel at the 10:55 mark of the third period.

Franklin & Marshall responded as Colin Hanley (Sr., Davidsonville, MD/DeMatha) scored an unassisted goal at 4:34 before Welsh connected with Adams for a score at 1:02 for a 5-2 lead after 45 minutes of play.

In the fourth period, the Diplomats turned up the pressure as Tom Kehoe (Fr., Coraopolis, PA/Sewickley) ripped a shot past Peterson following the face-off for a goal at 14:48. Adams added to the lead over a minute later as he finished an assist from Noah Wilkinsky (Fr., Ardmore, PA/Valley Forge Military) for a 7-2 lead with 13:32 left on the game clock.

The teams traded goals as Joe Mauri scored at 9:12 and 7:29 for the Fords, while Matt Capone (Sr., Scarsdale, NY/Scarsdale) and Adams netted scores for the Diplomats at 9:02 and 7:09, respectively, as Franklin & Marshall led 9-4.

The Diplomats pushed the lead out to 13-4 as Adams scored at 5:16 and 2:47, while Bobby Atkins (Fr., Concord, MA/Loomis Chaffee) and Welsh found the back of the net at 5:31 and 4:10, respectively, to lock up the team's sixth win of the season.

Overall, Welsh scored twice and assisted on four goals for six points as he raised his career numbers to 74-90-164 to move into a tie with Don Gervais' 96 for third in assists at the College and place sixth in points.

Tcheyan added a goal with 50 seconds remaining in the game for Haverford as the Fords fall to 17-2 all-time against Franklin & Marshall College in men's lacrosse.

F&M out shot Haverford 37-18 in the game, including a 17-3 margin in the first half, and won 16-of-21 face-offs as the Diplomats dominated the game statistically from opening whistle to closing horn.

In goal, Mike Sartorius (Sr., Summit, NJ/Summit) recorded 11 saves in 57:32 to earn the win, while Peterson stopped 13 of F&M's shots.

Franklin & Marshall (6-1, 2-0 Centennial Conference) will continue the Centennial Conference season on April 9 at home versus Muhlenberg College. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
