Washington & Lee Holds Off Franklin & Marshall 12-4 in Men's Lacrosse

BALTIMORE, MD -- Washington & Lee University attacker Grant Martin scored three goals and handed out three assists as the Generals defeated Franklin & Marshall College 12-4 in non-conference men's lacrosse action at Boys' Latin High School.

The Generals (3-2) opened the scoring 2:33 into the first quarter as Martin scored off an assist from Ned Rider. Franklin & Marshall (3-2) tied the score at 1-1 with 1:48 left in the opening period on an unassisted goal by midfielder David Steiner (Fr., Chappaqua, NY/Horace Greeley) as the team's entered the second period knotted at 1-1.

Washington & Lee regained the lead on an unassisted goal by midfielder Jim Ryan 23 seconds into the second period, but F&M tied the score at 2-2 just 59 seconds later on an unassisted goal by midfielder Peter Moon (So., Durham, NC/Durham).

However, Martin tallied his second goal of the game off a feed form Tim Skeen at the 9:51 mark of the second period to ignite a 5-0 run which gave the Generals a 7-2 lead with 14:49 left in the third quarter.

Attacker Mark Hild (Fr., Denver, CO/Denver East) scored off a feed from attacker Bobby Atkins (So., Concord, MA/Loomis Chaffee) at the 9:45 mark of the third period to slice the score to 7-3, but Washington & Lee tallied five of the next six goals in the game, including a pair by Rider, en route to the win.

In goal, Tim Kjeldgaard (So., Yarmouth, ME/Hyde) made eight saves in 60 minutes to take the loss, while W&L's Chris Lalli allowed three goals and made 13 saves in 57:37 and Alex Heaton permitted a goal by attacker Cyrus Adams (Jr., Nashville, TN/Montgomery Bell) off a feed from Moon in the final 2:23 of play.

The win marks W&L's second in the last four games between the two schools as the Diplomats knocked off the Generals 5-3 in Lancaster in 2004 and 5-4 in Lexington in 2003, while Washington & Lee escaped at home with a 7-6 (OT) victory last year as W&L is now 12-8 all-time against Franklin & Marshall in men's lacrosse.

Franklin & Marshall (3-2, 0-0 Centennial Conference) will continue the season on March 22 in the home opener versus Goucher College in non-conference action. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
