Box Score 2 LANCASTER, PA - York College of Pennsylvania pitcher Megan Mickles tossed a no-hitter in game one and came on in relief to earn the win in game two as the Spartans swept Franklin & Marshall College 9-0 and 4-3 (8 innings) in a non-conference softball doubleheader at Baker Field,
Mickles finished the day with three hits allowed with two walks and 14 strikeouts in 8.2 innings as the Spartans improved to 11-9 on the season, while Franklin & Marshall fell to 3-16.
In game one, Mickles recorded a no-hitter as she allowed a walk to F&M starting pitcher Ali Tyler (So., Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) with one out in the third inning to break-up a perfect game as she struck out eight of the 16 batters she faced to pick up the win.
The Spartans earned the win as York scored two runs in the first and second innings and five in the third inning for a 9-0 lead as Mickles did the rest not permitting a Diplomat to reach second base.
At the plate, third baseman Krista Williams led the way going three-for-three with five RBI and a run scored, while centerfielder Kari Meachem was two-for-four with three runs scored and an RBI and leftfielder Shannon Wood finished three-for-three with a run scored and an RBI.
Tyler took the loss allowing nine runs, including three earned runs, on 10 hits, two walks and three errors with one strikeout.
In game two, Mickles came on in relief with one out in the fifth to pitch 3.2 innings allowing three hits and one walk with six strikeouts to notch her second victory of the day.
Leading 3-1 entering the bottom of the fifth following a pair of runs in the top of the fourth to break a 1-1 tie, York staring pitcher Nicole Kerfoot allowed a single to centerfielder Dana Johns (Sr., York, PA/Eastern York) with one out. Johns stole second base and starting pitcher Bonnie Crouthamel (So., Chatham, NJ/Chatham) singled to shortstop to put runners on first and second before second baseman Meredith Morgan (Fr., Phoenixville, PA/Owen J. Roberts) singled to left centerfield to score Johns and move Morgan to second base. Third baseman Robyn Jones (Jr., Titusville, PA/Pennington) singled to load the bases and drive Kerfoot from the game as York College head coach Becky Bliss went to Mickles out of the bullpen.
Facing first baseman Kathleen Clinchy (So., Katonah, NY/Somers), Mickles allowed her first hit of the day as Clinchy singled to centerfield to score Crouthamel for the tying run and keep the bases loaded. However, Mickles settled in striking out rightfielder Leah Pearlman-Storch (Jr., Bala Cynwood, PA/Friends Central) and shortstop Jessika Mancino (Fr., Lancaster, PA/Hempfield) swinging to end the inning.
The Diplomats had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the seventh inning as Jones singled with one out and advanced to second on a throwing error by York shortstop Ali Merrifield. However, Mickles struck out Clinchy and Pearlman-Storch to end the inning and force extra innings.
York scored in the top of the eighth as Andrea Tombesi was placed on second base and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Becky Wimer. Kari Meachem followed with a single to shortstop to put runners on the corners, but Krista Williams laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Tombesi for a 4-3 lead.
The Diplomats had a chance to tie and win the game in the bottom of the eighth as Pearlman-Storch was placed on second base and moved to third on a bunt by Mancino to place runners on the corners. Catcher Liz Iannaconi (So., Palisades Park, NJ/Dwight Englewood) reached on a fielders choice bunt to load the bases as the Spartans elected to toss the ball home to protect against Pearlman-Storch scoring.
Facing a bases loaded, no out jam, Mickles popped up leftfielder Barbara Sasso (Fr., Warren, NJ/Watchung Hills) to third base and Johns to second base for the first two outs. Against Crouthamel, Mickles ended the game as she got a ground out to second baseman Laura Hauck who threw out Crouthamel by a step from her knees for the final out.
Crouthamel took the loss for the Diplomats allowing four runs on eight hits and three walks with two strikeouts as York improved to 22-17 all-time against Franklin & Marshall.
Franklin & Marshall (3-16, 0-0 Centennial Conference) will open the Centennial Conference season on April 1 at home versus Washington College in a doubleheader. Game one is set for 2:30 p.m.
