Gettysburg Edges Diplomats 2-0 & 5-2 in Softball Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LANCASTER, PA - Catcher Liz Iannaconi (So., Palisades Park, NJ/Dwight Englewood) went three-for-five, but Gettysburg College used a pair of late runs to edge Franklin & Marshall College 2-0 and 5-2 in a Centennial Conference softball doubleheader at Baker Field.

In game one, the Bullets plated runs in the fourth and seventh innings to hold off the Diplomats 2-0.

The Bullets plated the winning run with two outs in the fourth as Erin Ober singled through the left side of the infield and came around to score one batter later as Tayler Cianciotta roped a triple to right centerfield.

Gettysburg tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh as Meg Gorsuch walked and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Heather Sagaities. Jessica Wallick grounded out to shortstop for the second out of the inning, but Abbe Miller reached on a fielding error at first base that allowed Gorsuch to score for the 2-0 final.

Kristy Rubino picked up the win for the Bullets as she allowed five hits and one walk with five strikeouts in seven innings, while Bonnie Crouthamel (So., Chatham. NJ/Chatham) took the loss for F&M allowing two runs on five hits and three walks with seven strikeouts.

Overall, the team's combined to strand 15 base runners in the game, including seven by Franklin & Marshall as the Diplomats left five runners in scoring position at either second or third base.

In game two, Gettysburg built a 2-0 lead with solo runs in the first and fourth innings before tacking on three runs in the sixth to hang on for a 5-2 win.

The Bullets went ahead in the first inning with two outs as Miller and Nicole Yannotta singled to put runners on first and second base before Wallick singled to left field to drive in Miller for a 1-0 lead.

Gettysburg tacked on another run in the fourth as the Bullets strung together three singles, a fielder's choice and a pair of stolen bases to take a 2-0 lead.

Two innings later, Gettysburg plated the winning runs as Sagaities singled to drive in two runs and Katie Eiden grounded out to drive in another run for a 5-0 lead.

Franklin & Marshall attempted to rally in the bottom of the seventh as Meredith Morgan (Fr., Phoenixville, PA/Owen J. Roberts) led off the inning with a double to left centerfield. Sam Basuk (Fr., New York, NY/Indian Hills) followed by reaching on an error in centerfield that allowed Morgan to score to cut the Bullets lead to 5-1. Iannaconi singled through the right side of the infield to put runners on first and third with no outs before Leah Pearlman-Storch (Jr., Bala Cynwyd, PA/Friends Central) doubled down the right field line to drive in Basuk and move Iannaconi to third base to pull the Diplomats to within 5-2.

However, Gettysburg pitcher Shannon Kiry worked out of the jam getting the next three batters to ground out to shortstop, pop-up to shortstop and foul out to the catcher as the Bullets improved to 21-8 on the season, 5-3 in the Centennial Conference.

Kiry earned the win allowing two runs on seven hits and one walk with two strikeouts in seven innings, while Ali Tyler (So., Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) took the loss for the Diplomats allowing five runs on 12 hits and a walk before being relieved by Laura Kaesshaefer (So., Philadelphia, PA/William Penn Charter) who allowed three hits in one inning of work.

Franklin & Marshall (4-27, 1-11 Centennial Conference) will continue the season on April 20 at Albright College in a non-conference doubleheader. Game one is set for 3:30 p.m.
