Incorvaia Sets Hits & Homerun Records as Diplomats Fall 5-4 & 4-2 to Swarthmore in Softball

Box Score

SWARTHMORE, PA - Franklin & Marshall College shortstop Lauren Incorvaia (Fr., Manalapan, NJ/St. John Vianney) broke the school single season hits and homeruns records, but Swarthmore College held off the Diplomats 5-4 and 4-2 to sweep a Centennial Conference softball doubleheader at Clothier Field.

Incorvaia, who concludes the season with new records in hits (46) and homeruns (four), finished the day three-for-six with a run scored and an RBI to raise her season statistics to 10 doubles, one triple, four home runs, 23 RBI, six walks and five stolen bases with a .447 (46-for-103) batting average.

Incorvaia broke the school record of 44 hits held by former Diplomat and current Swarthmore assistant coach Jen Fried '04, who collected 44 hits in 2004, in game one as she went two-for-three with a run scored and an RBI in a 5-4 loss.

Swarthmore opened the scoring in the third inning as Christine Sendelsky launched a three run home run for a 3-0 lead.

Franklin & Marshall (5-32, 1-15 Centennial Conference) cut the margin to 3-1 in the fourth inning as Incorvaia slugged a homerun to centerfield for her 44th hit of the season to tie Fried and break the single season homerun record of three held by Ashley Kinley '99 from the 1996 season and Meghan Baker '08 from 2005.

The Garnet (21-14, 8-6 Centennial Conference) recovered the run in the sixth inning as Katie Gold singled to drive in Christina Procacci for a 4-1 lead.

F&M tied the game in the top of the sixth inning as Incorvaia led off the inning with a single to centerfield for her 45th hit of the season to erase Fried's single season hits mark. Robyn Jones (Jr., Titusville, NJ/Pennington School) reached on a fielder's choice as Incorvaia was forced out at second base. Liz Iannaconi (So., Palisades Park, NJ/Dwight Englewood) singled to move Jones to third base before being relieved by pinchrunner Barbara Sasso (Fr., Warren, NJ/Watchung Hills). Kathleen Clinchy (So., Katonah, NY/Somers) slammed a double to center field to plate Jones and Sasso to cut Swarthmore's lead to 4-3 before Leah Pearlman-Storch (Jr., Bala Cynwyd, PA/Friends Central) singled to center field to score Clinchy and tie the score.

Swarthmore plated the winning run in the bottom of the inning as Lauren Walker walked, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Dahlia Perez and scored on a dropped ball in rightfield on a fly ball by Marianne Klingaman for the 5-4 final.

Laura Kaesshaefer (So., Philadelphia, PA/William Penn Charter) took the loss for the Diplomats allowing one run on no hits, a walk and an error with a strikeout in one inning, while Bonnie Crouthamel (So., Chatham, NJ/Chatham) went five innings allowing four runs on three hits and six walks with six strikeouts.

Alexandra Zelaski picked up the win for Swarthmore allowing four runs on nine hits with four strikeouts in seven innings.

In game two, Incorvaia added to her hits record in the first inning as she drove a pitch to the outfield grass, but the Garnet worked out of a jam with runners on first and second to keep the game scoreless.

Swarthmore opened the scoring in the third inning as Procacci was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Melissa LaVan. Following a pop-up for the second out of the inning, the Garnet plated their first run as Sendelsky doubled to knock in Procacci for a 1-0 lead.

The margin increased to 3-0 in the fourth inning as the Garnet strung together two hits, two walks, a wild pitch and two Diplomats fielding errors to plate two runs. Swarthmore pushed the margin to 4-0 in the fifth inning as Gold launched a solo home run to lead off the inning.

Franklin & Marshall halved the lead in the top of the seventh inning as Iannaconi singled and Clinchy homered for the 4-2 final.

The home run marked the third of the season for Clinchy as she tied the previous school record to stand in second place in school history for most homers in a season.

Ali Tyler (So., Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) took the loss for the Diplomats allowing three runs on six hits in 3.1 innings, while Crouthamel finished the game allowing one run on one hit and two walks with four strikeouts in 2.2 innings.

Marianne Klingman picked up the win for the Garnet Tide allowing two runs on seven hits and one walk with a strikeout in seven innings.

Franklin & Marshall concludes the season 5-32, 1-15 in the Centennial Conference.
