LANCASTER, Pa. - Elizabethtown's Taylor Helsel's early first
half goal proved to be the game winner as the Blue Jays defeated
Franklin & Marshall 1-0 in The Battle of the Boot. F&M
(7-3-1) held possession of the Smith-Herr Bronze Boot for the last
two years. The Blue Jays (11-1) hold a 23-6-3 record in the series
that dates back to 1978.
Helsel goal came in the 15th minute when he took a
cross from Dan Featherer off the right wing and tapped the ball to
the lower left corner of the net. The goal marked Helsel's fourth
of the year.
The Diplomats had many scoring opportunities, playing the last
five minutes in front Elizabethtown's cage. F&M got off four
shots in that time span, but were unable to connect.
Eric Corsini and Giuseppe Bua led the Diplomat attack, each
firing off two shots.
Elizabethtown held a 12-8 advantage in shots, splitting two
corner kicks each with the Diplomats.
F&M keeper Zach Zamek takes the loss. Zamek (7-3-1) turned
away six shots in the contest. The Blue Jay's Eric Carr picks up
his fourth win of the season. Carr collected two saves.
The bronze boot is a soccer shoe originally worn by Al Hershey,
who was a two-time All-American at Elizabethtown. He later coached
both for the Blue Jays and Franklin & Marshall. The boot is
named for Robert Smith, who coached at F&M from 1947 to 1963,
and for Ira R. Herr, who coached Elizabethtown from 1938 to 1948
and from 1958 to 1960. Established in 1978, the purpose of the
trophy is "to memorialize the two men who did so much for soccer at
their respective schools."
Franklin & Marshall returns to action October
10th when the Diplomats host McDaniel.
