Greensboro, NC. – Franklin & Marshall swept Guilford
in a non-conference baseball double-header Monday afternoon. The
Diplomats won 13-1 in first game and came away with a 3-2 victory
in the nightcap. The Diplomats improved to 3-2 on the season while
the Quakers fell to 10-8.
F&M struck first, scoring off a Bill Murray double to take a
1-0 lead in the first inning. Guilford responded with their only
run of the game in the bottom of the frame. The Diplomats scored
two runs in the second and one in the third, leading 4-1.
The bats remained silent during the middle innings, before
F&M rallied off nine runs in the top of the sixth. Jay
Anderson drove in two runs in the innings as the Diplomats batted
around their lineup. Anderson finished with one hit, two RBIs and
scored two more in the game.
Matt Will scored a run and drove three more, Nick Rolnick picked
up an RBI and scored a run. Bill Murray, Russell Tischler, Eric
Borstein, Conor Devlin and Andrew Conlan all drove in a run in the
contest.
Mike Duranti pitched six innings, giving just one run and three
hits. Duranti picked up his first win of the season, striking out
four and walking one.
Game Two became a defensive battle with Josh Gray picking up his
second win of the year. Gray worked six innings, allowing one run
and two hits. He fanned five batters while walking three.
F&M scored all three runs in the third frame. Drew Atkins
singled in the second at-bat and advanced to second on a passed
ball to get a runner in scoring position. Matt Will walked in the
next plate appearance and J.T. Triantos singled, plating Atkins.
Coach Taylor signaled in a double-steal with Will taking home and
Triantos advancing to second. In the next at-bat, Jay Anderson
picked up an RBI with a single to left and error by the left
fielder allowed Triantos to score the third run of the inning.
Guilford countered with a run in the bottom half of the third
and added one more in the seventh. Brendan McCreary ending any
chance of the Quakers winning, picking up his first save.
The Diplomats return to the diamond tomorrow for a 3:00 p.m.
game versus Randolph-Macon.
