HARTFORD, Conn. - Pedro Veiga de Almeida advanced with a win in the round of 32 in the Molloy Division (Men's B Draw) to lead the Franklin & Marshall men's squash team at the College Squash Association (CSA) Individual Championships hosted by Trinity (Conn.) on Friday.
Veiga de Almeida earned a first-round bye and reached the round of 16 of the Molloy Division with a three-game triumph over Eric Caine of Yale, 12-10, 11-6, 11-7. The freshman will face off against James Kacergis of Navy in tomorrow's round of 16.
In the Men's A Draw, Guilherme de Melo opened with a convincing straight-game win (11-4, 11-9, 11-9) over Neil Martin of Yale to move onto the final 16 for the second straight season. The senior then fell to fifth-seeded Ahmed Abdel Khalek from Bates 11-3, 11-4, 11-8 in the second round and will meet Neil Cordell of Rochester in tomorrow's consolation quarterfinals.
After falling in his opening match, Mauricio Sedano picked up a victory in the consolations of the Men's A Draw with a 3-11, 11-9, 11-6, 11-4 triumph over Trinity's Reinhold Hergeth. Sedano will take on Yale's Richard Dodd tomorrow.
The other two players representing F&M, Alex Arjoon and Antonio De La Torre, each recorded one win on the day in the Men's B Draw and will continue play in the consolation rounds on Saturday. Arjoon began the day with an 11-8, 11-3, 11-5 victory in the round of 64 against Colby's C.J. Smith, before falling in five games to Harvard's Tom Mullaney (7-11, 11-8, 11-9, 10-12, 11-9). De La Torre bounced back from an opening-round defeat to top Gray Riley of MIT 11-5, 11-5, 11-2.
All five Diplomats will be back in action tomorrow on day two of the CSA Individual Championships.
