Box Score 2 LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall rode more quality pitching from Katie Wenger and Isabel Schaefer to a pair of close road wins on Tuesday, beating Lancaster Bible by scores of 3-2 and 6-5. The wins marked F&M's return from spring games in Florida and moved the Diplomats' record to 9-4 on the year.
Karly Newcomb got the scoring start in game one, knocking in Sam Burns with an RBI single in the bottom of the second. However, F&M had to wait until the top of the fifth to strike again, when Megan Ryan singled to drive in Samantha Clemens, making the score 2-0.
The Charger offense finally got some traction in the fifth, scoring two runs in the inning after Wenger pitched four scoreless to open the game. However, the Diplomats responded with a run of their own in the top of the sixth as Melissa Bollmeyer singled to drive in Alexa Smedberg, who was pinch running for Patricia Crigler following Crigler's single earlier in the inning.
Wenger continued to hold Lancaster Bible, pitching a scoreless sixth and two outs in the seventh before Schaefer took over to get the last out of the game.
Wenger earned the win, moving to 6-1 on the year after allowing two runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings of work. Schaefer recorded the save, her second of the year.
Crigler went 2-for-3 to lead the F&M offense, while Newcomb, Ryan, and Bollmeyer all finished with an RBI.
Schaefer returned to the circle for the second game of the day, picking up right where she left off by throwing sixth scoreless innings.
The Diplomats gave Schaefer plenty of run support, beginning in the third as F&M capitalized on a pair of Charger errors to score twice. Crigler notched an RBI as the Diplomats scored two more in the sixth, and an RBI triple from Ryan keyed another two-spot in the seventh for F&M, making the score 6-0 heading to the last frame.
Schaefer encountered some resistance in the home team's final at-bats, giving up three earned runs as Lancaster Bible scored five in the inning to cut the deficit to 6-5. However, the sophomore worked herself out of a bases-loaded jam to seal the win for the Diplomats.
Clemens finished 2-for-4 to pace the Diplomats, while Ryan, Crigler, and Enrica each tallied an RBI.
Schaefer gave up three earned on seven hits and struck out eight as she improved her record to 3-3 on the season.
F&M returns to action on Saturday, opening Centennial Conference play by paying a visit to Chestertown, Md. for a doubleheader against Washington. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
