AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Franklin & Marshall's baseball team had a game for the ages on Tuesday, tallying the most runs by a Diplomat team in 46 years, with an incredible 29-15 win against Stockton in Florida.
The 44 combined runs were the most in a contest since Oct. 1, 1887 when F&M defeated Millersville by a 32-20 score, also setting the program record for runs scored. The 29 runs were the most scored in a game since a 30-4 drubbing of Messiah in 1971. The Diplomats improved to 6-4 with their fifth-straight win on spring break while the Ospreys fell to 5-3.
F&M combined for 26 hits, compared to 12 for Stockton. Nine of the Diplomats' hits went for extra bases, including six doubles by six different players, a Tyler Daley triple and home runs from Kyle Ebert and Michael Caron.
Daley was unstoppable from the leadoff spot, going a perfect 6-for-6 with three runs scored, three RBIs and a walk. Dan Marano went 3-for-6 with five RBIs and two runs scored, Ebert tallied a 4-for-5 line with four RBIs and two runs scored and Zachary Roberson was 4-for-6 with seven RBIs and four runs scored.
Several other Diplomat batters had strong performances on the day with David Iacobucci and Andrew Poirier each recording a pair of hits.
F&M found itself down by a 12-3 score at the end of the third before scoring a pair of runs in the fourth and eight runs in the sixth to pull ahead by a 13-12 margin. An 11-run top of the seventh inning, which saw the Diplomats tally seven hits, brought the Ospreys on the brink of the mercy rule at 24-12.
Three runs in the bottom of the frame allowed Stockton to stay alive, before F&M registered five additional runs in the ninth to put the game away for good.
Seven Diplomat pitchers saw time on the mound and only surrendered four earned runs due to four errors from F&M. Kurt Elmer (1-0) earned the win with three shutout innings out of the bullpen, while Tyler Apt (0-2) suffered the loss after allowing four earned in one inning of action.
The Diplomats receive a much-deserved off day tomorrow, before returning to the field on Thursday for a 12:30 p.m. matchup with Roger Williams.
