ABBOTTSTOWN, Pa. – After a tremendous start to the 2021 season, only weather could stop the Franklin & Marshall's men's golf team on Sunday as the second day of the McDaniel Spring Invitational was cancelled. Due to the unplayable course conditions with rain in the area, the Diplomats finished as the team champions with a score of 294 (+6).
That team score of 294 during the first and only round broke the tournament scoring record by four strokes. Gettysburg's score of 298 during the first round of the 2016 McDaniel Spring Invitational was the previous record. Those two scores mark the only time during the 13-year history of the tournament that a 300 team score has been broken.
With the team's success came a number of individual accolades. Both Michael Gallagher and Jas Fuhrer fired rounds of 73 on Saturday and were tied for the lead. With the tournament unable to continue, medalist honors were decided based on the first handicap hole which is this case was No. 9. Gallagher was honored as the tournament's medalist as he birdied the ninth on Saturday while Fuhrer recorded a par.
The Diplomats also had four of the top five finishers with Jared Berlin and Dominic Sculti turning in rounds of 74 yesterday, just one off the pace of their teammates. Tyler Wassell posted a 79 on Saturday and was just outside of the top 10.
With the latest victory, the men's golf team has now won its last three tournaments dating back to the fall of 2019 when the Diplomats last competed before returning to the links this weekend.
The Diplomats now have just over two weeks before hosting the F&M Invitational at Bent Creek Country Club. That tournament is set for Monday, April 12 with a 12 p.m. noon tee time.
