Box Score ROANOKE, Va. -- Franklin & Marshall plated four in the sixth inning to pull away from Roanoke in an 8-4 victory in non-conference baseball action on Sunday afternoon. The Diplomats (2-1) used RBI from five different players to spark the win over the Maroons (2-2).
The Diplomats struck first in the top of the third, as Jakob Hoffman laced a two-run double to right field to score Bobby Falese and Will Samuel for a 2-0 lead.
Roanoke nearly answered back in the bottom half of the inning, chasing Kyle Roche by loading the bases with just one away. Carter Davis proceeded to strand all three runners, striking out the next batter and getting a fly out to end the inning. The Maroons did answer in the fourth, courtesy of an RBI single that cut the lead in half, 2-1.
Bobby Falese continued his hot stretch of hitting in the fifth, slapping a single to left that scored Samuel for a 3-1 lead. Roanoke smacked an RBI double in the bottom half to close it back to a one-run game.
F&M pulled away in the sixth, as first-year infielder AJ Desautels singled to right to bring home Drew Butera to tack on an extra run for a 4-2 lead. After a passed ball advanced runners to second and third, the Diplomats took advantage of another Maroon error, as Tommy Denlinger reached first on an error, then rounded his way to third on the errant throw - clearing the bases for a 6-2 lead. Will Samuel grounded out to short to score Denlinger for a 7-2 edge
Roanoke pulled back two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but a sacrifice fly from Denlinger in the top of the eighth finished off the 8-4 final.
AJ Desautels went 2-2 including a triple, plus two runs and an RBI. Jakob Hoffman also finished with a multi-hit game in a 2-5, one RBI effort.
Greg Nieskens picked up the win in relief of Kyle Roche, giving up four runs while striking out seven in 3.2 innings of work. Kyle Roche struck out four in 2.1 innings in the start. Carter Davis, Bijan Anvar, and Stephen Turzai combined for three scoreless innings of relief.
The Diplomats have a quick turnaround after returning home, travelling to Lebanon Valley on Tuesday for a 3:00 p.m. non-conference tilt.
