Box Score AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- Franklin & Marshall baseball dropped a rain-shortened affair against Ohio Northern on Saturday morning, falling 3-1 in five innings. The second game between the Diplomats (3-3) and Polar Bears (2-5) was cancelled due to inclement weather.
After the Diplomats went down 1-2-3 in the top half of the first, ONU grabbed a bunt single to lead off the bottom half of the inning, then worked a walk to put two-on with nobody out. A two-run double punched in the first runs, then an RBI groundout knocked in the last run of the day for the Polar Bears.
Kyle Roche settled down after the first, retiring the next seven batters he faced through the fourth.
F&M threatened in the third, loading the bases off a Spencer Berson double, Will Samuel walk, and AJ Desautels infield single - all with two gone. A pop fly to short ended any Diplomat chance in the frame.
The Diplomats grabbed one back in the top of the fifth, as Tommy Denlinger reached on catcher's interference, then landed on third on Berson's second hit of the day. With ducks on the pond, Will Samuel drove in Denlinger on a fielder's choice to cut the deficit to 3-1.
The rain proved too heavy to continue, and the game was ended after the top of the fifth with the Polar Bears leading 3-1, and an official game in the books.
Spencer Berson finished 2-2 at the dish, including a double. AJ Desautels and Jakob Hoffman managed the only other F&M hits.
Kyle Roche ended with four innings pitched, scattering five hits and three earned runs, while punching out six.
F&M looks to sunnier days ahead in Florida, as a doubleheader against Clarkson awaits on Sunday afternoon beginning at 10:00 a.m.
