HERSHEY, Pa. -- Franklin & Marshall men's golf is positioned in tenth place after the first day of the Hershey Open, riding a +34 team score into the second round on the par 70 course. The Diplomats sit 20 shots behind team leaders No. 5 Wittenburg University, who shot a course-best 294 (+14) in the overcast conditions.
Shane Lawler led the Diplomats with an opening round 76 (+6), shooting just three-over through 14 holes before a triple-bogey on the par-4 15th settled him into a tie for 23rd. His 4.33 stroke average on par 5's tied for a course-best on the day.
Matt Durnan turned in a 78 scorecard, finishing tied for 31st with a +8 effort. Birdies on 10 and 17 helped the first-year finish strong on the back-nine with a +3 effort.
Domonic Sculti finished a stroke behind Durnan, ending with a 79 (+9) on the day. Chris Dorey ended with an 81 (+11), while Jas Fuhrer struggled on the back-nine to an 83 (+13) round.
F&M finished the round tied for second on the course with ten birdies, as well as averaging 5.2 strokes on par 5s.
The Diplomats finish off the tournament tomorrow morning, looking to improve on its standing.
