Box Score 2 SALEM, Va. – The Franklin & Marshall baseball team (1-7) lost both of its games on the opening day of the Roanoke Round-Robin Saturday. F&M fell to host Roanoke (5-4), 8-1, in game one before losing to Marietta (4-3), 13-1, in the second contest of the doubleheader.
Game 1: Roanoke 8, F&M 1
The Maroons plated multiple runs in the bottom of the fifth and eighth inning, while limiting F&M to six hits in game one.
Franklin & Marshall broke into the scoring column first in the top of the first inning. Left fielder Drew Butera led off the game with a double into right field and advanced to third on a groundout two batters later. With two outs in the frame, first baseman Jakob Hoffman singled to drive in Butera – giving the Diplomats a 1-0 lead.
Roanoke answered by scoring five runs in the first five innings to claim the lead.
Butera led F&M offensively with two hits in the game.
Greg Nieskens (0-3) was hit with the loss as he struck out four batters and allowed one earned run in four innings on the mound. Peter Mullen struck out five in four innings of relief.
Game 2: Marietta 13, F&M 1 (7 Innings)
Marietta scored three runs in the fourth and seven runs in the fifth to down F&M Saturday afternoon.
Trailing 2-0 in the top of the third inning, third baseman Tommy Denlinger reached on an error and advanced to second on the play. Shortstop Bobby Falese smacked a double into center field to score Denlinger - cutting the deficit in half.
Along with Falese, Butera also recorded an extra-base hit in the loss.
Kyle Roche (0-3) was the losing pitcher of record, allowing five earned runs in four innings on the bump.
Franklin & Marshall concludes the Roanoke Round-Robin against Brockport Sunday at 10:00 a.m.
