FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Franklin & Marshall women's tennis team saw the first-year duo of Chloe Monachelli and Judy Yang advance to round of 16 at the ITA Southeast Regional Championship on Saturday. Yang's success did not stop in doubles as she also reached the round of 16 in championship singles before falling a three-set tiebreaker.
The Monacehlli/Yang team started their tournament with an 8-7 (5) tiebreaker win against Christopher Newport. The duo was much more efficient during their round of 32 match as it dispatched Swarthmore's team by an 8-2 score. That doubles team will face Carnegie Mellon's Victoria Gazda and Nehir Ertan at 8 a.m. on Saturday with a spot in the quarterfinals on the line. With a win, the quarterfinal match would take place on Sunday afternoon.
After opening championship singles with a three-set win on Friday, Yang knocked off ninth-seeded Bella Nichillo of Carnegie Mellon in straight sets (6-3, 6-4). She was also up a set on Swarthmore's Riley Williams during her round of 16 match before her Centennial Conference foe ultimately prevailed in a 10-7 tiebreak after forcing the decisive set with a 7-5 win in the second.
Other action on Saturday saw Kakie Colclough eliminated from the singles draw as she ran into third-seeded Addison Felts of Mary Washington. Monachelli did add another win to her weekend in singles as she defeated Swarthmore's Ella Strickler before dropping a tough match to Haverford's Adelaide Kreutel in consolation action.
In the blue draws, Lorena Saavedra and Emiliia Husieva are both into the quarterfinals after taking down respective Centennial Conference opponents from Dickinson and Gettysburg in straight sets. Action in those draws will continue on Sunday.
