FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Franklin & Marshall women's tennis team wrapped up action at the ITA Southeast Regional Championship on Sunday at Mary Washington.
After making their way to the round of 16 in championship doubles, first-years Chloe Monachelli and Judy Yang lost a heartbreaking tiebreak, 8-7 (5) to Carnegie Mellon. That narrow loss came after hard-fought wins against both Christopher Newport and Swarthmore earlier in the tournament. In other championship doubles consolation action, the pairing of Emiliia Husieva and Lorena Saavedra received a walkover victory against Johns Hopkins' third-seed pairing. They concluded their weekend with an 8-6 defeat at the hands of Dickinson.
In singles action, both Saavedra and Husieva were alive in the main bracket of the blue draws. In Blue II singles, Saavedra advanced to the semifinals with an 8-6 victory against Christopher Newport. A walkover placed her in the finals where she was stopped by host Mary Washington's Natalie Howell. Husieva was competing in Blue III singles where she defeated Catholic's Cristina Moreira in the quarterfinals before a semifinal defeat at the hands of Virginia Wesleyan's Jette Hafermann.
Women's tennis will now have a dual match at Bloomsburg on October 10 to wrap up the fall portion of its schedule before playing the majority of its schedule during the spring semester.
