CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Franklin & Marshall picked up a 6-3 victory at Washington College in its Centennial Conference (CC) men's tennis opener on Saturday. The Diplomats improve to 2-3 (1-0 CC), while the Shoremen drop to 3-4 (1-1 CC).
No. 2 Tommy Weibye and No. 4 Nolan Bacchieri recorded straight set wins in singles. Weibye took his match 6-1, 6-0 over Vishnu Rajes, and and Bacchieri notched a victory over Marc Cywinski with scores of 6-2, 6-2. No. 3 William MacArthur won a first-set tiebreaker and went on to claim the victory, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 over Dan Boate. At No. 1 singles, Ross Silverberg downed Kevin Papen in three sets. Silverberg took the first in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-5), with Papen securing the second set 6-1, and Silverberg responding in the third set with a 6-2 win.
In doubles action, F&M took the first two matches with the Shoremen claiming the third. MacArthur and Silverberg teamed up to defeat Papen and Aaron Ellison 8-6 at No. 1, while Weibye and Bacchieri nipped Cywinski and Bajes in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (8-6).
The Diplomats return to the court on Wednesday as F&M hosts its home opener against Ursinus in CC action. Match time is set for 4:00 pm.
