FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Franklin & Marshall's men's tennis team dropped a close 5-4 decision to No. 16 Mary Washington Thursday afternoon in non-conference action. The Diplomats (3-4) picked up their four wins in the singles matches, with the Eagles (8-11) sweeping the doubles matches.
F&M won its first four singles matches of the day, with Ross Silverberg, Tommy Weibye, William MacArthur, and Nolan Bacchieri winning their third consecutive matches. No. 1 Silverberg and No. 2 Weibye both won in straight sets with scores of 6-2, 6-4. No. 3 MacArthur and No. 4 Bacchieri both needed the third set to get their wins. MacArthur defeated Tyler Carey 6-3, 4-6, 8-6, and Bacchieri notched his win against Will Apperson 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
The Diplomats four singles victories were not enough as Mary Washington held on for the narrow victory. The Eagles swept the doubles to take a 3-0 advantage heading into singles play. The F&M No. 1 team of Silverberg and MacArthur went to a tiebreaker with Evan Charles and Donato Rizzolo, but fell just short, 9-8 (7-5).
F&M returns to action on Saturday when the Diplomats host conference opponent McDaniel. Match time is set for 2:30 pm.
