EWING, NJ – Franklin & Marshall dropped a 5-4 decision against The College of New Jersey in non-conference men's tennis action on Sunday afternoon. The Diplomats comeback attempt in singles play fell short as the Lions improved to 6-2 and F&M fell to 4-5 on the season.
Trailing 2-1 after doubles, the Diplomats attempted to rally for a come-from-behind win in singles. F&M tallied victories at the No. 1, 2, and 4 spots, but TCNJ nabbed wins at remaining three singles positions in straight sets to take the match. No. 1 Ross Silverberg defeated TJ Riley 6-4, 6-2, with No. 2 Tommy Weibye getting a straight set win over Steven Fernadez 6-4, 6-3. F&M's other singles victory came at the No. 4 spot, as Nolan Bacchieri edged out Howard Telson in a first-set tiebreaker and went on to capture the three setter, 7-6 (7-5), 2-6, 6-2.
The Diplomats lone doubles win came from the No. 2 team of Weibye and Bacchieri. The duo defeated Riley and Fernadez 9-8 (7-4), while Silverberg and William MacArthur lost a narrow 8-6 match to Telson and Stewart Fernadez at No. 1.
F&M returns to action on Tuesday when the Diplomats travel to Johns Hopkins for a Centennial Conference match-up. Match time is set for 3:30 pm.
