LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall hosted Mary Washington in its first home match of 2016, overpowering the nationally-ranked Eagles by a score of 6-3. Mary Washington, ranked 21st in the nation, is the highest-ranked opponent that the Diplomats have beaten since April 7, 2012 when F&M downed No. 21 Swarthmore.
By The Numbers
F&M owned both the doubles and the singles competition en route the victory. Inigo Flores and Vasant Rajamanickam recorded an 8-5 victory at No. 2 doubles while the team of Zack Levin and Isaac Salas also earned an 8-5 win at No. 3.
Jack Rothman and Doug Kaplan each recorded tough victories in singles. Rothman tallied a 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 decision at No. 3, and Kaplan won six straight games in the third set to storm back from a 3-0 deficit and win 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 at No. 1.
Ultimately it was Salas that clinched the match for the Diplomats, claiming a 6-1, 6-7 (4), 6-2 win at No. 4 to tally his second point of the day and the fifth of the match for F&M.
