FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The No. 39 Franklin & Marshall men's tennis team put together a solid performance during the second day of the ITA Southeast Regional Championships, hosted by Mary Washington. F&M competed in five doubles matches and seven singles matches as all six Diplomats participating in this weekend's tournament saw action on Friday.
F&M started the day with three duos playing in the Championship Doubles Bracket.
Nate Arnold and
Zac Ashtiani downed their opponents from Washington & Lee, 8-4, in the Round of 64, but later fell to Johns Hopkins, 8-5, in the Round of 32.
Jack Gelman and
Hugh Outwater also earned a win in the opening round as they defeated Casey Knipe and Matthew Miller from Muhlenberg. However, Gelman and Outwater were downed by Swarthmore, 8-1, in the second round.
Luke Brodsky and
Soren Rudin-Aulenbach kept it close in their Round of 64 matchup, but were held off by their opponents from Mary Washington, 8-6. All three doubles teams dropped to the consolation bracket to be played on Saturday. Brodsky/Rudin-Aulenbach play Stevens at 8:00 a.m., followed by Arnold/Ashtiani playing Mary Washington and Gelman/Outwater battling Stevens at 9:00 a.m.
Franklin & Marshall ended the day with five Diplomats competing in singles, earning wins in both the Championship Singles Bracket and B3 Singles Bracket. Playing in the Championship Singles Draw, Brodsky outlasted Roanoke's Luis Hernandez, 6-0, 6-4, before falling to Carnegie Mellon's Alex Feies, 6-1, 6-0, in the Round of 16. Rudin-Aulenbach earned a win in the B3 Singles Round of 16, 4-6, 6-1, 10-3, over Mary Washington's Keldibek Kozhoev. However, the junior was stopped by Johns Hopkins' Daniel Greene, 6-4, 6-2, in the quarterfinals. Ashtiani battled in the Championship Singles Consolation bracket, but fell just short to Haverford's Roberto Vazquez, 8-6. Arnold and Gelman fought hard in their respective matches, but both players were defeated in three sets. Gelman lost to Johns Hopkins, 6-3, 3-6, 10-8, in the B1 Singles Bracket, while Arnold was defeated by Christopher Newport, 7(11)-6(9), 5-7, 10-5, in the B2 Singles Bracket. Arnold and Gelman will be back in action competing in their respective consolation matches on Saturday, starting at 10:30 a.m.
