Women's Tennis Begins Fall Slate at ITA Regional Championships

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Franklin & Marshall women's tennis team sent six players to compete at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships, hosted by Mary Washington, with the tournament beginning on Saturday. All six individuals competed in doubles, while four Diplomats played in singles during the opening day.

F&M started the day in doubles, with two of the three pairings earning a bye to the Round of 32 in the Championship Draw. The duo of Sahara Ahmad and Natalie Untermeyer opened the weekend with a 6-2 victory over Christopher Newport in the Round of 64. Ahmad and Untermeyer later fell to Johns Hopkins' Lia Melvin and Jay Xiao. The tandem of Kakie Colclough and Sophia Rhazali battled Haverford's Aarti Prochnow and Jolie Zink, but fell short, 8-4. The duo of Rebecca Bellick and Amelia Squires rounded out the doubles matches, falling in the Round of 32 to Carnegie Mellon by walkover.

The Diplomats will look to move through the consolation bracket, starting on Sunday at 9:00 a.m.

Rhazali and Untermeyer both won their first singles matches of the day with both wins coming in the Round of 64 of the Championship Draw. Rhazali won her match, 8-2, over Dickinson, while Untermeyer defeated her opponent from Haverford, 8-3. Despite the early wins, both Diplomats fell in their respective Round of 32 matches. Sahara Ahmad and Rebecca Bellick fought hard in the opening round, but both were defeated in their respective matches.

Both Ahmad and Bellick will look to earn some wins in the consolation bracket, beginning on Sunday at 10:30 a.m.
