LANCASTER, PA - Johns Hopkins University captured #2, 3, 5 and 6 singles and #3 doubles to upset Franklin & Marshall College 5-4 in women's tennis.
The loss drops F&M's record to 11-4 on the season, 7-3 in Centennial Conference play, as the Diplomats finish fourth in the Centennial Conference, while Johns Hopkins (13-3, 8-2 Centennial Conference) finish third.
The Diplomats jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the match as the doubles team of Barbara Bee (So., Millersville, PA/Penn Manor) and Kate Gaskins (So., Richmond, VA/Mills Goodwin) defeated Meghan Hasenauer and Jill Seidman 8-5 at #1 and Lizzy Denenberg (Jr., Wilmington, DE/Sanford) and Jenna Ishkanian (Fr., Wyckoff, NJ/Ramapo) held off Tanya Gulnick and Vandna Jerath 9-8 (4) at #2. The Blue Jays opened their scoring in the #3 match as the duo of Michelle Liang and Becky Busch downed the team of Beth Conner (Sr., Leawood, KS/Shawnee Mission East) and Christina Henkel (Fr., Hatboro, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) 8-5.
In singles, Gaskins overcame early struggles to defeat Gulnick 2-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2 at #1 and Denenberg coasted past Busch 6-1, 6-3 at #4, but Hopkins' Liang, Jerath, Seidman and Hasenauer notched wins at #2, 3, 5, and 6, respectively, to lead the Blue Jays to their 13th win of the season.
The victory improves Hopkins to 6-23 all-time against Franklin & Marshall.
Franklin & Marshall (11-4, 7-3 Centennial Conference) will continue the season on April 29-May 1 at Swarthmore College and Haverford College in the 2005 Centennial Conference Championship Tournament.
