LANCASTER, Pa. - Franklin & Marshall held a 2-1 lead following doubles play, but Haverford rallied to take four singles points en route to a 5-4 triumph in Centennial Conference (CC) women's tennis action on Saturday.
The Diplomats lost their second straight 5-4 decision and fall to 3-7 overall and 0-4 in CC play, while the Fords, ranked 16th in the Atlantic South Region, improve to 8-6 overall and 4-1 in the CC.
F&M captured doubles wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions to grab a 2-1 lead. Anya Sahaydachny and Julia Fiala earned an 8-6 victory over Abbey Flynn and Kate Donches at No. 2, while Megan FitzMaurice and Dana Sleeper edged out Alex Ferrera and Caitlin Gallagher at No. 1, 9-8 (7-4).
Julia Fiala (No. 4) and Nina Simic (No. 5) tallied straight set singles win for F&M, but it was not enough as Haverford rallied in the singles by securing wins at spots No. 1-3 and No. 6. Fiala eased to a 6-2, 6-0 win over Celia Tong, while Nina Simic downed Jordana Bloom 6-4, 6-1.
Shannon Littlefield was outlasted in three sets 0-6, 6-1, 6-0 by Abbey Flynn at No. 6, while Sahaydachny (No. 1) and FitzMaurice (No. 2) each suffered narrow first-set losses before falling in the second.
F&M returns to the court on Wednesday at CC foe McDaniel at 3:30 pm.
