LANCASTER, Pa. - Franklin & Marshall took down Gettysburg 8-1 in Centennial Conference (CC) women's tennis action on Wednesday in Lancaster. The Diplomats (5-8, 2-5 CC) swept the three doubles points, and went on to secure wins at five of the six singles spots over the Bullets (7-6, 4-3 CC).
In doubles, the No. 1 tandem of Danielle Weiner and Anya Sahaydachny eased past Kelsey Boyce and Isabelle Rodriguez 8-3, while the No. 2 and No. 3 teams pulled out tight matches to give F&M a 3-0 lead. Megan FitzMaurice and Dana Sleeper edged Laura Habecker and Meghan Fornshell 9-7 at No. 2, and Julia Fiala and Shannon Littlefield defeated Meg Kelly and Maggie McLaughlin by an 8-6 count.
Sahaydachny, FitzMaurice and Fiala each delivered straight-set victories in singles, while Sleeper and Littlefield downed their opponents in three sets. Sahaydachny scored a 6-2, 6-4 triumph against Kylie O'Sullivan at No. 2, FitzMaurice defeated Kelly 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3, and Fiala won 6-2, 6-3 over Kelsey Boyce at No. 5.
At No. 4 singles, Sleeper notched a 6-4 first set win, but Habecker responded by taking the second set 6-1, before Sleeper cruised to a 6-0 victory in the third to take the match. Littlefield shook off a first set setback to Maggie McLaughlin at No. 6 and went on to tally a 3-6, 6-0, 6-4 win.
The Diplomats return to action on Saturday at Ursinus in CC action. Match time is set for 1:00 pm in Collegeville, Pa.
