Shorewomen Outlast F&M

LANCASTER, Pa. - Franklin & Marshall dropped a 6-3 decision to visiting Washington College on Saturday in Centennial Conference (CC) women's tennis action. The Diplomats fall to 3-3, 1-1 CC with the defeat, while the Shorewomen move to 3-3, 2-1 CC. 

Washington took the early edge by securing two of the three doubles points, claiming tight victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. Anya Sahaydachny and Megan FitzMaurice were outlasted 9-7 at No. 1 by Campbell McNicol and Marielle McIntyre, while Dana Sleeper and Meredith Lackey fell 8-6 at No. 2 to April Weaver and Gyeyeon Kang. 

F&M's No. 3 tandem of Emily Gruenberg cruised to an 8-2 triumph over Kat Cohen and Amy Stevens to give the Diplomats one point heading into singles competition. 

Fiala and Naomi Smith both registered straight-set wins in singles for the Diplomats. Fiala topped Cohen at No. 3, 6-2, 6-1, while Smith downed Stevens 6-1, 6-1. 

At No. 4 singles, Gruenberg captured the first set against Kang by a 6-2 count, but ultimately fell 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. 

F&M returns to CC action on Wednesday at fourth-ranked Johns Hopkins at 3:30 p.m.
