SALISBURY, Md. – The Franklin & Marshall women's tennis team opened its 2014 season on a high note, edging out Salisbury with a 5-4 win on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action. The victory gave the Diplomats a 1-0 record on the year, while the Sea Gulls, ranked No. 7 in the atlantic south region, fell to 1-2.
Salisbury took two of the three double's matchups in the contest, with F&M's lone win coming from the team of Emily Gruenberg and Rachel Weinstein at No. 3 with an 8-4 score, however F&M captured four of the six single's competitions on the afternoon.
After falling at No. 1 and No. 2, the bottom half of the Diplomats' singles lineup proved to be the deciding factor. Anya Sahaydachny was victorious at No. 3 by winning both of her sets at 7-5, 6-1, while Emily Gruenberg defeated Salisbury's Claudia Lohn at No. 4 with a 6-3, 6-4 tally.
Buchney was dominant from No. 5, easily handling her opponent in a 6-1, 6-2 decision. With the contest knotted at 4-4, Allysan Breece defeated the Sea Gulls' Megan Knapp at 6-7 (3-7), 6-3, 6-4 to seal the victory for F&M.
The Diplomats head down to Florida on Sunday to face off against Marian (Ind.) at 12:00 p.m., kicking off a series of five competitions in five days.
