CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Franklin & Marshall's women's tennis team continued its strong start to Centennial Conference (CC) play, downing Washington by a 7-2 score on Saturday afternoon in Chestertown, Md. The win improved the No. 8 regionally-ranked (Atlantic South) Diplomats to 5-3, 2-0 CC, while the Shorewomen fell to 3-4, 0-3 CC.
F&M dominated singles action by picking up victories at all but one position. Anya Sahaydachny faced stiff competition at No. 2 but outlasted Washington's Marielle McIntyre by a 6-3, 1-6, 10-6 score. No.'s 3-6 cruised, registering straight-set wins from Nicole Russo at No. 3 (6-0, 6-2), Megan FitzMaurice at No. 4 (6-1, 6-1), Emily Gruenberg from the No. 5 position (6-0, 6-0) and Tara Buchney at No. 6 (6-1, 6-0).
Dana Sleeper and FitzMaurice combined at the No. 2 spot in doubles play for the dominant 8-2 win, while Rachel Weinstein and Gruenberg teamed at No. 3 for the 8-4 victory.
The Diplomats return to action tomorrow when F&M faces off against Christopher Newport (ranked No. 13 in the Atlantic South Region). Originally scheduled to take place at the Brooks Tennis Center, the match will now be played at Spooky Nook Sports in Manheim, beginning at 8:00 a.m.
