The 1978 baseball squad under second year Coach Don Wert, had a much improved season. The team finished with a 14-11-1 overall record.

The Diplomats recorded a 9-2-1 record against M.A.C. Southwest opponents and won the title for the first time. Franklin & Marshall defeated Gettysburg 8-0 on the last day of the regular season to nail down the championship and eliminate Gettysburg from the conference playoffs.

The highlight of the year cam in the M.A.C. playoffs as underdog Franklin & Marshall defeated Widener 5-1 and then upset favored Wilkes 5-4 to become the overall M.A.C. champion. The feat is even more impressive since both Widener and Wilkes were picked to participate in the 1978 NCAA Division III baseball tournament.

Post season honors were accorded Tim Christman ’78 (first base), Tom Bachman ’78 and Jeff Wagner ’80 (pitchers) when they were selected for the M.A.C.-Southern Division All-Star second team.
