Allen G. "Scott" Barry '82 came to Franklin and Marshall Collegefrom Basking Ridge, N.J., and quickly established himself as astrong freestyle swimmer. During his collegiate career, he wouldswim for head coaches George McGinness and Barbara O'Hora Flick. Hewas a dominant swimmer and set many school, pool, and conferencerecords. Highlighting his career, Barry was the team captain in1982 and the team's Most Valuable Swimmer in 1979, 1981, and 1982.He was the team's high point scorer for four consecutive years,swimming a variety of freestyle events from 50 to 1,000 yards.During his first year, Barry was undefeated in the regular seasonin the 100, 200, and 500 freestyle races and set F&M records ineach.

He won the MAC championship in the 200 and 500 yard freestyleevents in times fast enough to qualify for the NCAA Division IIIchampionships. The 200 yard time of 1:46.17 was a new conferencerecord. After an exceptional regular season his sophomore year,Barry again dominated the MAC championships, earning first place inthe 200 and 500 yard freestyles, and a third in the 100-yardfreestyle. Qualifying for the NCAA Division III nationals in the200 and 500 yard freestyles, Barry earned All-American recognitionin both events with a sixth place finish in the 200-yard race, inF&M record time of 1:44.21, and an eighth place finish in the500-yard race, also in school record time of 4:44.87.

Barry's attack on the record book continued his junior season.He set an MAC championship record in winning the 200 yard freestylewith a time of 1:45.17. He also finished second in the 500 yardevent and third in the 100-yard race. For the second year in a row,he earned All-American honors in two races at the NCAA Division IIIchampionships. He placed 10th in the 200-yard freestyle (1:43.85)and 12th in the 500-yard freestyle (4:43.40), both bettering hisown school records. Barry closed out his career with an outstandingsenior season. Dominant as always during the regular season, he wonthe MAC championships in both the 200 and 500 yard freestyles, thelater in MAC record time of 4:44.56.

At the NCAA Division III championships, Barry had his bestshowing with a fifth place finish in the 200-yard freestyle, inF&M record time of 1:43.81, and a tenth place finish in the500-yard freestyle, both results earning All-American honors forthe third consecutive year. Barry was named the 1982 OutstandingSenior Male Athlete. He graduated with a bachelor's degree insociology and a minor in government. He currently lives in Paoli,where he works as an underwriter and assistant vice president forthe Legion Insurance Company.
