A three-year varsity first baseman and starting guard, Plitt wasan exceptional two-sport athlete. In baseball, he was a three-year"Little 3" first baseman and held the college batting averagerecord of .435, set in 1953 until the early 1980s. The son of amajor league pitcher for the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants,Plitt took part in F&M's first recorded triple play in April of1951. In addition to playing first base, Plitt was considered anexcellent pitcher for his "blazing" fastball, according to majorleague scouts of the day.

Following graduation, Plitt signed a bonus contract with the St.Louis Cardinal organization in 1953. Plitt's road to F&M waspaved via a four-year athletic scholarship sponsored by Coach WoodySponaugle following a high school senior year, which saw Plitt winthe Pennsylvania State Basketball Championship at York High School.While at F&M, Plitt averaged 15 points per game while a memberof the men's basketball team.

A member of the 1952 squad, which set a national scoring recordfor both small and large colleges by averaging 93.5 points pergame, Plitt's high scoring game was reached in 1952 when herecorded 29. He continued his education following F&M byearning both a master's degree (1954) and doctorate (1961) fromColumbia University.
